Game Notes: Libby Matson Classic

WHAT'S ON THE AGENDA?
  • Nevada travels to Stockton, Calif., for the Libby Matson Classic scheduled for Feb. 26-27.
  • The Pack faces Idaho State and Pacific on Friday and again on Saturday.
  • Nevada opens the weekend against Idaho State on Feb. 26 at 11 a.m. (PT).

 LAST TIME OUT
  • Nevada finished the Dixie State Classic on Feb. 19-21 with a 3-2 record, moving its overall record to 7-3. The Pack recorded losses to BYU and Utah Valley.
  • Nevada opened the Dixie State Classic with an 8-5 win over No. 2 Washington on Feb. 19.
  • The Pack recorded wins over No. 2 Washington, Dixie State and Montana. 
UP NEXT
  • Nevada heads to Palo Alto, Calif., for the Stanford Invitational on March 5-7.
  • The Pack will face Stanford twice, BYU and Cal over a three-day period.
  • Nevada is slated to face BYU for the second time this season.
 PACK GOES 4-1 OPENING WEEKEND
  • Nevada opened the season, going 4-1 at the NorCal Kickoff on Feb. 11-14. The Pack split with Saint Mary's on Feb. 11, winning the first game 6-2 and dropping the second game 2-1. The Pack bounced back on Feb. 12 by sweeping UC Davis. To cap the weekend, Nevada defeated Sacramento State, 10-0, in five innings to move its record to 4-1. 
NEVADA DOWNS NO. 2 WASHINGTON
  • Nevada opened the Dixie State Classic on Feb. 19 with an 8-5 victory over No. 2 Washington. Julia Jensen secured her first win on the mound for the 2021 season, throwing two innings and giving up zero runs, forcing zero hits and tallying two strikeouts.
  • The Huskies pounced first in the third inning on two solo home runs to take a 2-0 lead. Nevada replied in the fourth on a Haley Burda two-RBI single to center that scored Sierra Mello and Kenzi Goins.
  • In the fifth, Goins' single to center plated Sadaria McAlister and advanced Lauren Gutierrez to third. Next, Salausa's single to center scored Goins and moved Mello to second to push Nevada's lead to 4-2. Burda stepped up next for the Pack, scoring Mello from second on a single to right. Next, Sam Oliver's sacrifice fly to center plated Salausa to extend the Pack's lead to four.
  • Washington bounced back with three runs in the top of the sixth to cut Nevada's lead to one.
  • Nevada answered in the bottom of the sixth on a Lauren Gutierrez RBI single to center that pushed Senini across home. Then, Mello tallied an RBI on a ground out to short, scoring Goins from third to give Nevada an 8-5 edge. 
DIXIE STATE RECAP
  • Nevada moved its overall record to 7-3 after the Dixie State Classic, picking up wins against No. 2 Washington, Dixie State and BYU. The Pack's win over No. 2 Washington marks its first win over a top-five program since the Pack defeated No. 1 Arizona in 2008. In the next game, the Pack downed Dixie State 13-0 in five innings. Nevada dropped two games on Feb. 20 to BYU and Utah Valley. Nevada capped the weekend with an eight-inning victory over Montana. 
SID THE NOT SO SLOTH
  • Sadaria McAlister tallied two games at the NorCal Kickoff with multiple stolen bases. McAlister recorded three bases in Nevada's 10-0 win over Sacramento State on Feb. 14. In Nevada's second game against Saint Mary's, McAlister stole two bases, had one hit and an RBI. In the Pack's 4-3 victory in game two against UC Davis, McAlister went 2-for-3 at bat, including a triple. McAlister also had a strong performance against Sacramento State, going 2-for-2 at the plate, drawing two walks and scoring two runs.  McAlister added on three stolen bases at the Dixie State Classic, recording one stolen bases against Washington, BYU and Utah Valley. McAlister paces the Pack with nine stolen bases through 10 games.
HOME RUN CLUB
  • Senior Kenzi Goins tallied two home runs at the NorCal Kickoff. Her first home run of the season came against Nevada's 5-4 game one win over UC Davis on Feb. 12. Her two-run shot to left center in the sixth inning cut UC Davis' lead to one. Against Sacramento State, Goins tallied her second home run of the year on a solo shot to left in the third inning. Goins has 22 career home runs.  Junior Lauren Gutierrez recorded her first home run of the season against Sacramento State on Feb. 14. Nevada continued its home run streak at the Dixie State Classic on Feb. 19-21. Senior Sadaria McAlister recorded her first home run of the season on a solo shot  to left cetner against Utah Valley. Junior Lauren Gutierrez and senior Haley Burda also registered home runs against Montana on Feb. 21 
WELCOME TO THE LAUREN SHOW
  • University of Nevada junior shortstop Lauren Gutierrez was named Mountain West Softball Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. Gutierrez batted .562 (9-16) in five games at the Dixie State Classic on Feb. 19-21, leading Nevada to wins over No. 2 Washington, Dixie State and Montana.
  • The Upland, Calif., native played errorless defense all weekend with nine assists and five putouts.
  • Gutierrez went 2-for-3 at the plate against No. 2 Washington with a single, double, walk and clutch RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to extend Nevada's lead to 7-5. Gutierrez had a career-best hitting performance in Nevada's 13-0 victory over Dixie State. Against the Trailblazers, Gutierrez went 4-for-4 at the plate, tallying a career-high four hits and tying her career-high in RBIs with five. Gutierrez recorded Nevada's lone hit against BYU on Feb. 20. Gutierrez went 2-for-3 at bat with her sixth-career home run, 2 RBIs and a run in Nevada's 6-5 victory over Montana.
  • This is Gutierrez's second weekly honor and the second of the season for Nevada. Gutierrez was the last Nevada softball player to earn Player of the Week honors when she tabbed the award on May 15, 2018.  
KEEPING UP WITH KENDALL
  • Kendall Fritz was named Mountain West Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 16. It is the sophomore's first weekly honor of her career.
  • The Frisco, Texas, native starred in the circle for the Pack during the NorCal Kickoff. On Feb. 11, Fritz compiled an 11-strikeout performance in a 6-2 win over Saint Mary's. On Feb. 12, Fritz struck out six UC Davis hitters in Nevada's 4-3 win over UC Davis. Fritz also recorded the save in Nevada's 5-4 victory against the Aggies on Feb. 12 and pitched an inning in the Pack's 10-0 win over Sacramento State on Feb. 14, striking out two hitters. Fritz recorded two wins and a save over the weekend, moving her record to 2-0 on the season. Fritz has posted a 1.24 ERA and leads the Mountain West with 22 strikeouts in four games.
 BURDA GOES YARD, propels nevada to win over montana
  • Haley Burda's clutch two-run home run to left in the top of the eighth against Montana on Feb. 21 powered Nevada to a 6-5 victory over the Grizzlies.
  • Blake Craft (3-2) recorded the win for Nevada, giving up zero earned runs and strikeout out four Montana hitters in eight innings.
  • The Pack was led offensively by Lauren Gutierrez and Haley Burda, recording both of their sixth-career home runs against the Grizzlies. Gutierrez went 2-for-3 at the plate with a two-run home run in the third and a single to center in the first. Burda went 2-for-4 at the plate, including a two-run home run in the eighth, a single in the fourth and a stolen base. Chelie Senini, Sadaria McAlister, Kenzi Goins, Kallahan Hunter and Charli Hawkins each recorded a hit throughout the ballgame. Nevada out-hit Montana at a 9-8 clip.
