ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Day one of the Mountain West Indoor Championship saw two sophomores compete in an action packed pentathlon.
Hanah Smrt and Anna Marie Sommerfeld competed in the pentathlon throughout the first day of competition. A pentathlon that saw the sophomores break many personal bests throughout each of the events.
The first event was the 60 meter hurdles, which saw both of the student-athletes get their respected personal bests. Smrt finished with a time of 9.10 to tie for eighth and earn 889 points. Sommerfeld finished in 10th with a time of 9.17 which earned her 875 points.
After that was the high jump, which again saw the sophomores get personal bests in the event. Smrt was in a four-way tie for fifth with a height of 1.61m which earned her 747 points. Sommerfeld finished in 10th with a height of 1.49m which gave the sophomore 610 points.
Sommerfeld came back and saw success in the shot put with a personal best 11.24m that gave her a third place finish and 611 points. Smrt finished in 12th with a distance of 9.05m and 467 points which was also a personal best for the sophomore.
The long jump saw Smrt finish in seventh with a distance of 5.48m and 694 points to her total. Sommerfeld finished in 12th with a distance of 4.99m and earned herself 557 points.
The last event was the 800m run, which saw Sommerfeld fall behind and finish 12th with a time of 2:41.57 and 555 points to finish her day. Smrt saw more success and finished in 10th with a time of 2:34.52 and 637 points.
Sommerfeld ended the pentathlon in 12th with a point total of 3,208 points. Smrt finished just ahead of her teammate in ninth place with a point total of 3,434 points.
After the pentathlon, Nevada competed in the distance medley relay. The race saw junior Carli Corpus, freshman Kelise Davis, junior Eliza McCall, and junior Stefanie Ortega earn a seventh place finish with a time 12:01:53.
The Pack will look to get back on track tomorrow in day two of the Mountain West Indoor Championship.
