Tierney Wolfgram breaks American Junior record

RENO, Nev. – After joining the Wolf Pack this summer, Tierney Wolfgram continues to impress after breaking the Women's American Junior marathon record.

Wolfgram, who is only 17-years old, broke the Women's American Junior record with her time of 2:31:49 in only her third marathon. Her time completely shattered the old record of 2:34:32, which had stood since 1984. The freshman's time also was only around 11 minutes behind the under-20 world marathon record set by Shure Demise with her time of 2:20:59.

Assistant coach EmKay Sullivan, who was there to witness Wolfgram's record, talks about how proud she is of the freshman.

"I'm absolutely stunned," said Sullivan. "I knew she was going to break it, but she really showed out today! She has a couple of great teammates in Adam and Carson, who helped her immensely in her American record run. They paced perfectly from the beginning and never let off the gas. Super proud to call her part of the Wolf Pack."

The freshman already showed out earlier this year when she competed at the 2020 US Olympic Trials. Wolfgram ran in the 2020 US Olympic Trials marathon finishing in 2:42.47. She was the youngest qualifier for the Olympic trials marathon in 2020, competing there while still 16 years old. Out of the 360 women who competed in the trials, she finished 76th overall. Like many high school athletes this spring, Wolfgram was forced to time trial, running 4:54.7 for the mile, 10:22 for 3200m and 16:34.7 for 5000m.

The young runner from Minnesota, who attended Woodbury High School, also had two Minnesota 1A State Cross Country titles, as well as a Minnesota 1A State title in the 1600m and 3200m. All of this adding to an already impressive resume at a young age.

Wolfgram looks to break many records in her very young Nevada Cross Country career.
