Nevada men’s cross country roster preview

RENO, Nev. – With a good mix of veterans and newcomers, the Nevada men's cross country team is ready for new challenges in the upcoming year. 
 
The roster will consist of eight veterans who competed last season and seven newcomers joining the Wolf Pack. The group of veterans, which includes six from the state of Nevada, are looking to be even better than their successful first season.
 
One veteran that saw tons of accomplishments throughout the season was sophomore Jared Marchegger. The sophomore scored second overall and first out of the Pack athletes competing in the 8k at the Nevada Twilight Classic with a time of 24:39. He also finished 47th at the Mountain West Championship with his time of 25:29.6. His time of 35:35.6 at the NCAA Mountain Region Championship was good enough to rank him in 124th.
 
Adam Sjolund, one of only two veterans not from the state of Nevada, finished fourth overall and second out of the Pack athletes competing in the 8k at the Nevada Twilight Classic with a time of 24:47. The now sophomore finished 46th at the MW Championship which was the best Wolf Pack performance with his time of 25:29.6. His time of 33:25.7 at the NCAA Mountain Region Championship was good enough to rank him 95th and was also the best time out of Wolf Pack athletes competing.
 
Massimiliano Swenson, who attended Bishop Gorman, finished eighth overall in the 8k at the Nevada Twilight Classic with a time of 25:24. He also finished 49th at the MW Championship with his time of 26:00.6. Though, his time of 34:04.5 at the NCAA Mountain Region Championship ranked him in 113th and was the second-best Wolf Pack time in the event.
 
From right here in Reno, Carson Leavitt had a successful season which saw the Reno native finish fifth overall and the third fastest time out of the Pack athletes competing in the 8k at the Nevada Twilight Classic with a time of 24:50. He also scored 51st at the MW Championship with his time of 26:10 and ranked 127th overall at the NCAA Mountain Region Championship.
 
Celime Garcia from Minden, Nev. finished in 13th in the 8k at the Nevada Twilight Classic with an impressive time of 26:01. Garcia also competed at the NCAA Mountain Region Championship which saw him earn a time of 35:54.7. This was good enough to rank him 126th overall.
 
Mahkai Davis, one of only two veterans not from the state of Nevada, looks to improve as he did throughout the last season. Davis finished in 26th in the 8k at the Nevada Twilight Classic with a time of 28:16. He then improved his time in the 8k at the Capital Cross Challenge with his time of 28:08.8.
 
Alex Mendoza competed in two meets throughout the seasons which saw the Reno native scored 214th overall in the 8k at the Capital Cross Challenge with a time of 29:25.7 and improved his 8k time at the Bronco Invitational with his time of 27:43.
 
One veteran who will look to compete for his first time will be Henry Wisberg from Reno. Wisberg, along with the many newcomers will look forward to compete next season. Coach Elias especially will look forward to his very talented newcomer class that includes seven new members.
 
Teagan Hansen is another new addition from Nevada to join the Pack. The walk-on from Carson City attended Sierra Lutheran High School and had a slew of success there. His résumé includes three top-3 finishes at the Nevada 1A State Championship, one in cross country and two for track that included placements in the 3200m and the 1600m. Some of Hansen's personal bests include a time of 9:57.36 in the 3200m and a time of 15:54 in the 5000m.
 
Also from Nevada, Matthew Kruse joins the Pack from Minden. Kruse, who went to Douglas HS, competed in cross country, track, and soccer in high school. Kruse earned all-region team for cross country in 2018-19 and has best times in the mile is 4:40 while his best time in the 5k is 16:30.
 
Daniel Sayo is the only other member to sign a National Letter of Intent with the Pack. Sayo is from Narok, a town in Kenya where he attended Najile Boys Secondary School. His personal best includes a time of 8:51 in the 3000m at an altitude of over 7,000 feet.
 
Also joining the Pack from Kenya is Brian Kipchumba. Kipchumba went to St Mark's Kaptumo Boys HS in Nandi County, Kenya. Before joining the Pack, Kipchumba also went to Lubbock Christian University and had all-conference honors in 2019. Some of his personal bests include 19:59.6 in the 6k, a time of 25:23.7 in the 8k, and a time of 32:39.9 in the 10k.
 
Kyle Elias joins the Pack as the second walk-on. Elias is originally from Dublin, Calif. and attended Dublin High School in his hometown. Some of Elias' personal bests include a time of 9:44.33 in the 3200m and a time of 15:55.7 in the 5000m.
 
This roster will look to improve and succeed in their second season.
