RENO, Nev. - After back-to-back 3-1 weekends, the Nevada softball team is looking to continue the neutral site wins in California. The Pack starts the weekend at the Silicon Valley Classic that is co-hosted by Santa Clara and San Jose State before traveling to Moraga, Calif. for a doubleheader against Saint Mary's on Sunday.
Sitting at 9-6 in non-conference play so far, the Pack has claimed six of its last seven neutral site games and won six of its last seven total games. This weekend marks the last tournament for Nevada before opening up Mountain West play at Hixson Park next weekend against Utah State.
The Silicon Valley Classic begins on Friday, March 8 with the Pack matching up with 2018 NCAA Regional team, Cal State Fullerton at 9:00 a.m. PT in Santa Clara. Nevada then travels to San Jose State to take on Cal State Northridge in the 4:30 p.m. PT contest. Saturday, March 9, the Pack plays two games with the first against Northern Kentucky at 2:00 p.m. PT and is followed by UC Davis at 4:30 p.m. PT, both in Santa Clara.
Nevada rounds out the weekend with a doubleheader against Saint Mary's in a true road doubleheader on Sunday, March 10 beginning at 12:00 p.m. PT.
Last time out, the Pack defeated Northwestern State twice and took down Omaha in a three-hit combined shutout from
Rachel Rodriguez and
Kendall Fritz. Nevada tallied double digit hits in two games and nine in each of the others for 39 combined hits on the weekend.
Kenzi Goins continues the upward trend posting a .500 average in the Wooo Pig Classic with eight hits, five runs and three RBI. The junior hit the walk off RBI double to take the win over Northwestern State in the game that went eight innings; she also hit the two-run home run against Omaha to secure the win for the Pack.
This weekend marks the first time Nevada matches up with Northern Kentucky and just the fifth time meeting Cal State Fullerton. It also marks just the sixth time the Pack has played against the Matadors of Cal State Northridge. UC Davis and Nevada was scheduled to meet prior this season in the UC Davis tournament but due to rain and field conditions the game was canceled.
