CRESWELL, Ore. – Led by junior
Sam Meek, the Nevada men's golf team earned a fifth place finish at the Duck Invitational from Emerald Valley Country Club.
The Wolf Pack fell two spots on the final day of competition into fifth, still earning a top five in the field of 16 teams. Nevada combined for a team score of 304 (16-over) in the final round and finished at 20-over par for the tournament. Oregon State won the team title at 3-under par, the only team in the field to finish the event under par. The Beavers captured the title by 10 shots over tournament host Oregon.
Meek was the most consistent Wolf Pack golfer this week and grabbed sole possession of fourth place. It marked Meek's third top five finish of the season and second consecutive after he finished first in the team's last event, the Olympic Club Collegiate. Meek hovered around the individual lead for most of the day, but fired an even par 72 to remain at 1-under for the tournament. He finished four shots back of individual winner Ryan Gronlund of Oregon and was one of just four players in the 88-player field to finish under par.
Elsewhere for Nevada, sophomore
Joey Vrzich turned in the second-lowest Wolf Pack round of the day with a 3-over 75. Vrzich earned a tie for 16
th place after he finished the event at 4-over. Junior
Stephen Osborne posted the third-best Pack round at a 5-over 77 and tied for 76
th. Freshman
Trey Davis and sophomore
Sam Harned each recorded rounds in the low 80s on Tuesday and placed in a tie for 41
st and 49
th, respectively.
Nevada wastes no time in getting back out there as it will compete in Stanford's event, The Goodwin, this Thursday through Saturday in Palo Alto, Calif.
