TUCSON, Ariz. - Nevada Men's Golf opened the Mountain West Men's Golf Championships, Sunday, posting an eight under-par 280 team total to sit in sixth place, seven back off leaders and reigning champions San Diego State. Nevada were one of two teams in which all five players broke par.
The Pack were led by junior
Jonathan Kim in round one, posting a three under-par 69 that included seven birdies, three of those coming on the front nine and four coming on the back. Kim made the second most birdies in the field in round one and will look for more of the same firepower in round two, he sits in 11th place.
Freshman pair
Monte Chumchaivate and
Riki Matsumoto both posted two under-par rounds of 70 in their conference championship debuts, making four and five birdies respectively. Chumchivate was sixth in the field for par five scoring, playing the fives in three under, whilst Matsumoto sits eighth in the field for birdies made at five. The pair sit tied for 17th heading into round two.
Rounding out the starting five were senior duo
Liam Gobin and
Ben Ortwein, both posting one under-par rounds of 71. The pair made three and four birdies respectively, with Gobin sitting fourth in the field for pars made (13) and Ortwein sitting seventh in par four scoring, playing the fours in two under-par. The pair sit tied for 21st heading into round two.
The Pack will return to play for round two tomorrow paired with Grand Canyon and UNLV.
