SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Nevada track and field team competed in the first day of the San Diego State Aztec Invitational today. Leading the way was freshman
Emily Costello's 200m finish, which moved her up in national, regional and Nevada lists.
Costello posted a time of 24.16 to take third overall in the 200m. The time was an improvement from her previous personal record of 24.24, set last week at the Hornet Invitational.
The time moves Costello up in several lists. On the Nevada all-time list, Costello moves from sixth to fourth, and in the national rankings moves from 33rd to 28th. In the west region, Costello moves from 16th to 13th. The mark of 24.24 was already the top in the Mountain West heading into this weekend.
Also moving into the Nevada top 10 was freshman
Gabby Fraser in the triple jump. Fraser took second overall with a personal record jump of 38' 5" (11.71 m). The mark is the ninth-best in Nevada history. Heading into the weekend, the jump is the third best in the conference.
Opening up the day was the 4x100m relay. The Wolf Pack squad of senior
Makeya White, Costello, sophomore
Lauren Green and junior
Andrea Stark finished second with a time of 47.26 seconds. White posted a top 15 time in the 100m dash as well, finishing 13th with a time of 12.29.
In the 100m hurdles, sophomore
Nicola Ader took fourth overall with a time of 14.47 seconds. Ader was one of four Nevada representatives in the top 10 of the event. Sophomore
Agnese Mulatero took sixth with a time of 14.60, Stark took eighth with 14.67 and freshman
Anna Sommerfeld ran a time of 15.12 to finish 10th.
The Pack had two athletes in the top five of the pole vault, led by junior
Gaby Palmer taking second with a max height of 13' 2.50" (4.02 meters). Senior
Emily Etter took fifth with a max height of 12' 8.25" (3.87 m).
In the shot put, the Pack saw two athletes finish in the top four. Sophomore
Tina Lao finished third with a toss of 40' 6" (12.34 m) and freshman
Grace Wills took fourth with a throw of 40' 5" (12.32 m).
Lao would join two other teammates in the top 16 of the discus. Junior
Taylor Forte took 11th with a throw of 128' 5" (39.15 m) and freshman Keena Murphy took 13th with a mark of 127' (38.73 m). Lao's 122' 3" (37.27 m) toss was good for 16th.
Three freshmen ran in the distance events for Nevada, led by
Alexis Melendrez taking second in the 5,000m with a time of 17:33.77. The race was Melendrez's track debut. In the 1,500m,
Tabatha Walford and
Mikayla Shults both landed in the top 13. Walford took ninth with a time of 4:41.68 and Shults took 13th with a time of 4:44.53.
Junior
Delaney Gosse took second in the high jump with a max height of 5' 5.25" (1.66 m).
