RENO, Nev. – Making her first appearance in a Wolf Pack uniform, freshman
Julia Jensen helped lead the Nevada softball team (2-2) to the Pack's second win over Louisiana Tech (0-3) in as many days. In the Pack's first game on Friday, Nevada fell to Long Beach State (2-0) by a score of 16-8.
Against the Lady Techsters, Jensen tossed a complete game, where she allowed just four hits, no earned runs and struck out six batters, including three of the last five she faced. The stellar defense she had behind her committed just two errors, which is an improved of the seven Nevada committed against the 49ners.
Nevada wasted no time getting its high octane offense going against LA Tech, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning that was ignited by a two-run home run from sophomore
Kenzi Goins. Goins finished the game going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
The Pack's next two runs came from playing a little small ball as freshman
Jessica Sellers used a sacrifice fly to bring home freshman
Rheanna Smith and sophomore
Sierra Mello brought around Goins off of a single to left field. After a fielding blunder that would latter give LA Tech its lone run of the game, Jensen bounced back to keep the Lady Techsters from crossing the plate to cap off her gem, where she didn't allow a hit to any of LA Tech's one through six hitters in Nevada's 5-1 win.
Earlier in the day, Nevada squared up against Long Beach State, in which errors proved costly for the Pack. Those errors resulted in eight unearned runs being charged to the Pack's pitching staff. After LBSU came out to score a pair of runs in the top of the first, Nevada fired right back, responding with four of its own in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-2 lead into the second.
That two-run lead turned out to be the Pack's only advantage against LBSU as the seven errors was too much for Nevada to overcome as the 49ners took the game, 16-8. Both Sellers and sophomore
Mele Tausinga collected a pair of hits in the game.
Nevada will have a rematch with Long Beach State on Saturday in the Pack's final game of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge. That game against LBSU is slated for noon PT.
