PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – After finding itself down by as many as six runs, the Nevada softball team (2-3) came storming back in the seventh inning to score five runs in the final frame before falling short to Long Beach State (4-0) on the final day of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge.
The Wolf Pack was led by sophomore
Kenzi Goins and freshman
Lauren Gutierrez who each went 3-for-4 on the day. Senior
Aaliyah Gibson also recorded multiple hits, but none bigger than the three-run home run she launched down the right field line to ignite the Pack's offense in the seventh and bring Nevada within three runs.
Junior
Alyssa Mendez continued the two-out rally for Nevada after her single and advancement off an error from the 49ers allowed freshman
Jessica Sellers to drive Mendez home from second base to make the score 7-5. With Sellers on second because of another LBSU miscue, Gutierrez stepped up to the plate and hit a rocket up the middle to score Sellers and bring Nevada within one run.
The Pack's loud top of the seventh came to an end after a sharp ground ball with two runners on was cleanly fielded by the 49ers as LBSU took the 7-6 win. Up next, Nevada will travel to Las Vegas, Nevada to compete in the Desert Classic Feb. 16-18.
