CLOVIS, Calif. -Â Nevada Track and Field opened competition at the Credit Union 1 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Thursday, highlighted by two medals in the javelin competition, finals qualification in the 200m and strong starts in the heptathlon.Â
The heptathlon kicked off day one competition, with Alma Kathan leading the way for the Pack, sitting second overall with 3199 points, while Anne Schuch is in seventh with 2994 points.
Kathan posted multiple top finishes throughout the day, including a third-place finish in the 100m hurdles with a personal-best time of 14.26 and a runner-up finish in the 200m with another personal best at 24.61. She also cleared 1.67m to place third in the high jump and recorded a mark of 9.79m in the shot put.
Schuch also recorded a pair of personal bests, finishing seventh in the 100m hurdles at 14.79 and placing 10th in the 200m with a time of 26.39. She added a strong second-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 12.33 meters and cleared 1.55m in the high jump to place fifth.
On the track, the 800m prelims saw Kylee Denver lead the Wolf Pack with an 11th-place finish in 2:09.74, followed closely by Malena Galvan in 13th at 2:10.54. In the 200m prelims, Annalies Kalma delivered a standout performance, placing second overall with a personal-record time of 23.24 to advance to Saturday's final. Kylee Parsons also competed in the event, finishing 19th with a personal best time of 24.22, that time is the new ninth fastest in school history.
The javelin was a highlight event for the Pack, as Lilly Urban claimed the Mountain West javelin title for the second year in a row, throwing 54.26m on her second throw of the day. Urban's mark will be enough to send her to NCAA Regionals and potentially nationals. Hallee Hughes followed with a strong runner-up finish with a personal best throw of 52.88m, the new second best throw in Pack history. Freshman Ava Dierolf notched a 10th-place mark of 37.87m in her first conference championship appearance for the Wolf Pack.
Nevada represented well in the 400m hurdles prelims, with Oke Gift Ovedje placing 13th in 1:01.97 and Leylah Diaz finishing just behind in 14th at 1:02.02. In the 10,000m, Aubrey Thompson placed 11th with a time of 37:49.78.
The Pack will return to action at 10:20 a.m. tomorrow for the conclusion of the heptathlon and more prelim events.Â
