Reno, Nev. - Nevada Track and Field kicked off the Credit Union 1 Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships, Thursday, highlighted by
Johanna Haas, taking home a silver medal in the pentathlon, setting a new #2 all-time point total. The Pack took home 16 points on day one, sitting fourth in the team standings.
The pentathlon kicked off competition on day one of the championships, with conference leader
Johanna Haas, conference number three
Alma Kathan and Valeria Paez-Rueda the representatives for the Pack. Haas took out the 60m hurdles competition, running an 8.56, taking 1004 points, Kathan ran third, running a personal best 8.75 to score 963 points and Paez-Rueda ran tenth with a time of 8.96 to take 918 points.
The Pack showed their prowess in the pentathlon high jump competition, with all three Wolf Pack competitors finishing in the top five.
Alma Kathan highlighted the group, clearing a personal best 1.69m to place third, earning 842 points.
Johanna Haas placed fourth, clearing 1.66m a strong performance earning 806 points. Valeria Paez-Rueda also notched a lifetime best, placing fifth with a clearance of 1.66m earning 806 points.
In the shot put section of the pentathlon,
Johanna Haas continued her form throwing 12.97m to place first, earning 725 points. Valeria Paez-Rueda had the next best throw for the Pack, throwing 11.06m placing fifth earning 599 points.
Alma Kathan rounded out the Pack pentathlon trio, throwing 10.08m earning 535 points.
In the pentathlon long jump,
Alma Kathan led the way for the Wolf Pack jumping 5.72m to claim fourth place earning 765 points, Valeria Paez-Rueda took eighth with a jump of 5.58m taking home 723 points and
Johanna Haas jumped 5.51m to take tenth place, taking 703 points to maintain first place heading into the final event for the pentathlon, the 800m.
Haas gave the 800m everything she had, running a 2:27.44 to take 12th place earning 786 points, enough to earn runner-up place in the pentathlon and earning a silver medal. Haas' championship pentathlon was historic for the Pack with her 3963 point total the new number two all-time total for Nevada, overtaking Wolf Pack great Nicola Ader.
Alma Kathan ran 11th in the 800m, placing fourth overall in the pentathlon with 3831 points, a great debut to the indoor championships for Kathan. Paez-Rueda rounded out the Pack efforts in the 800m finishing 13th and seventh overall with 3730 points. All three Pack pentathletes took home championship points for the Pack, a strong start to the championships.
In the 200m prelims,
Annalies Kalma maintained her conference best form, running a 23.37 to take the first qualifying spot for Friday's final.
Magdalene George ran a 24.09 to take 10th, narrowly missing out on the top eight that make it to the final.
In the pole vault competition both Pack representatives, Adessa Matthews and
Alyssa Carson, cleared the opening height of 3.54m, placing 17th and 19th respectively.
In the DMR, Nevada's relay team of
Skylar Bennett,
Kylee Parsons,
Halyn Senegal and
Natalie Roberts ran a 12:06.46 to place eighth.
The Pack will return to competition tomorrow, for a day filled with jumps and sprints. High jump will kick off Pack action at 1:15 p.m.
