RENO, Nev. – Nevada women's soccer forward
Naima Castro has been named the Mountain West
Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Monday, after a breakout opening weekend on the road.
Castro started both matches for the Wolf Pack, logging
148 minutes across the two contests while establishing herself as one of Nevada's most dangerous attacking threats. Against Arizona State, she recorded a team-high
one shot and consistently pressed the Sun Devils' back line.
Her impact grew even larger in Sunday's matchup at Northern Arizona. Castro netted her
first collegiate goal in the
66th minute, a game-tying strike that shifted the momentum and sparked Nevada's 2-1 comeback win. She finished the match with
two shots, both on goal, and led the Wolf Pack with
three total shots on the weekend.
Through her first two collegiate appearances, Castro is averaging
1.5 shots per game and
0.50 goals per game, quickly becoming a key piece of Nevada's attack.
"Naima stepped up for us this weekend and showed tremendous composure in big moments," head coach
Vanessa Valentine said. "She's a young player who continues to grow every match, and this recognition is well deserved."
Castro becomes the
first Nevada player this season to earn Mountain West weekly honors.
The Wolf Pack (1-1) returns home to Mackay Stadium on
Thursday, August 28, hosting Cal Poly at 7 p.m. PT.
