RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. - Victoria Gailey carded her second consecutive round of 71 (-1) on Wednesday, pushing her up the leaderboard into a tie for fifth place while pacing Nevada, as they remained in fourth place in the team standings after 36 holes of play at the 2023 Mountain West Championships.
Nevada recorded a combined score of 294 (+6) Wednesday, and they will enter Thursday's final round of play in fourth place, while sitting just five strokes outside of the top-three, as they will have the opportunity to move up the leaderboard over the final 18 holes.
Gailey had another exceptional performance, and she moved into the top-five of the individual standings as a result. The fifth-year senior had a phenomenal showing on the front nine, parring the first eight holes before earning a birdie on the par-5 9th hole.
Gailey then hit what was potentially the most sensational shot of the tournament on the 10th hole. After an immaculate drive, Gailey found herself sitting 125 yards out from the pin. She elected to hit her nine iron and stroked a ball that sailed perfectly onto the green and rolled into the hole, as she earned an eagle. Gailey closed out the round with six pars and two bogeys over the final eight holes to secure her second consecutive round below bar.
Leah John carded a 77 (+5) on Wednesday, moving her 36-hole score to 147 (+3). She is tied for 18th heading into the final round. John had eight pars and four birdies throughout the second round and will aim to have a strong performance on the final day and move into the top-10 of the leaderboard.
Anitra Khoth recorded a 76 (+4) in the second round after picking up 10 pars and two birdies. She is tied for 22nd overall heading into the final set of 18 holes.
Kayla Nocum had a stellar round two performance, shooting even par (72) to move up nine spots on the leaderboard and into a tie for 32nd. Nocum started off her round with a par before earning an eagle on the par-5 2nd hole. She had eight pars, five bogeys, and three birdies over the remainder of the round, including tallying a birdie on the par-5 18th hole to secure the second-round score of 72.
Gabby Kano is tied with Nocum in 32nd on the individual leaderboard after carding a 76 (+4) on Wednesday. Kano had a solid round, as she picked up 13 pars, four bogeys, and one birdie to record the 76.
The Pack is set to close out the 2023 Mountain West Championships with one final 18-hole round slated for tomorrow morning. Nevada is scheduled to begin play at 7:45am. Nocum will tee off first with subsequent tee times scheduled for every nine minutes following Nocum.
