RENO, Nev. - The Nevada Men's Golf team will head west to San Francisco, California to compete at the 53rd playing of The Goodwin this weekend, presented by Palo Alto and held at well-renowned TPC Harding Park.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament begins Thursday morning and closes out competition on Saturday afternoon.
The Goodwin is one of the signature collegiate tournaments in the nation. Named in honor of former Hall of Fame Stanford Golf Coach, Wally Goodwin, the 2023 version of the event will mark the 53rd year that the tournament has been held.
Nevada has had tremendous success at The Goodwin in each of the past two seasons, as the Pack has won two consecutive individual championships, with Peyton Callens claiming the outright title last season.
The Field
This year's version of The Goodwin boasts one of the strongest fields in tournament history. In addition to Nevada and host school #7 Stanford, the 28-team field includes BYU, Cal Poly, California, Colorado, Florida Atlantic, Fresno State, #11 Georgia Tech, Howard, Lipscomb, Little Rock, Mercer, Northern Illinois, #13 Oklahoma, #20 Oregon, San Diego, San Francisco, San José State, Santa Clara, SMU, St. Mary's, UC Davis, UCLA, USC, Utah, Washington, and Washington State.
The Course
TPC Harding Park is recognized as one of the top venues in the nation. Numerous PGA Tour events have been held at the course, including the 2009 Presidents Cup and the 2020 PGA Championship. Originally designed by famed golf architects Willie Warson and Sam Whiting, TPC Harding Park first opened in 1925. A par-70 spanning 6,939 yards, the course is known for its narrow fairways, deceptive greens, and challenging finish, as it provides a premier and challenging experience for golfers.
Projected Lineup
Alex Maxwell
The freshman has finished first in the Wolf Pack lineup in each of the two events he has competed in this season. He is coming off an impressive performance at the Lamkin San Diego Classic where he completed the event tied for 32nd after recording a 54-hole score of 220 (+4). In two events since joining the Pack this January, Maxwell has shot even-par or better in three of six rounds. He will aim to once again lead the Pack with a stellar performance over the next three days.
Connor Motherway
Motherway earns a spot in the Wolf Pack lineup for the first time this spring and will look to make an immediate impact. He competed at the Lamkin San Diego Classic as an individual participant and had a solid outing, finishing tied for 63rd with a three-round score of 226 (+10). Motherway had his best round on the final day, carding a 73 (+1) to close out the event.
Trey Davis
Davis did not have his best performance at the Lamkin San Diego Classic; but, he had his best round on the final day, recording a 73 (+1) over the final 18 holes of the event. Davis competed in last year's version of The Goodwin and had an impressive performance, completing the tournament at four-over-par after carding scores of 72 (+2), 70 (E), and 72 (+2).
Keita Okada
Okada is having a solid spring season thus far, most recently finishing tied for 56th at the Lamkin San Diego Classic after recording a 54-hole score of 224 (+8). Okada has shot even-par in three of six rounds this spring, and he will look to have his best three-round performance yet at The Goodwin.
Peyton Callens
The 2022 Individual Champion returns to The Goodwin seeking to defend his title. Callens had an immaculate performance at last year's tournament , shooting 65 (-5), 67 (-3), 65 (-5) to finish the event 13 strokes below par and secure the title. Callens did not have his best performance at the Lamkin San Diego Classic last time out, but he will aim to bounce back in a massive way over the next three days in a tournament that he has had tremendous success at in the past.
Individual Participants
Tom Patterson
Patterson will be competing at The Goodwin as an individual participant. He had a strong finish in his last event, turning in back-to-back rounds of 73 (+1) and 72 (E) to close out play at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate earlier this spring. He will look to carry over momentum and have a strong showing at The Goodwin.
