Haas finishes heptathlon in third place to conclude day two

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – After a strong showing through two days of competition for the multis group, freshman Johanna Haas concludes competition coming away with a third-place finish with 4,816 points, a new collegiate season best, and only 409 points away from her lifetime personal record.
 
"I'm happy with the way the ladies competed this weekend," said multis group coach Scott Williamson. "We had some good things happen overall, but definitely a learning experience for when we get to the championship portion of the season."
 
Haas's performance throughout the final three events saw three top-10 finishes, a sixth place in the long jump (5.47m), marking a new season best in the event, and a fifth place in the javelin throw, her mark of 37.48 meters being her first showing in the event in two years, and only three meters off her lifetime personal record. To wrap up the day, Haas placed 10th in the 800 meter, running a new personal record of 2:31.77, ultimately finishing in third place overall in the final scores.
 
For freshman Valeria Paez-Rueda, she earned a 14th place finish in the 800 meter, dropping five seconds for a new personal record of 2:33.84. She placed 11th in the long jump (4.95m) and eighth in the javelin (31.42m), her third top-10 finish of the weekend. Paez-Rueda's mark put her only two meters away from her personal record of 33.79 meters. Finishing the two-day stretch, Paez-Rueda secured 10th place overall with 4,358 points, a collegiate season best in the heptathlon.
 
Junior Kate Kadrmas also had a successful showing in the 800 meters to finish the day. Her time of 2:36.22 marks a season best time, where she finished 16th overall. Kadrmas finished 14th in both the long jump (4.85m) and the javelin throw (28.07), her mark only three meters away from her all-time personal record of 31.03 meters. Kadrmas would finish 15th overall with 3,569 points.
 
The final day of the Aztec Invitational will begin Saturday, March 25 with the rest of the track and field events. Competition is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. with the javelin event. Live results will be available HERE, as well as a live video stream available HERE.
