RENO, Nev. -Â Nevada sophomore
Loris Zisswiller was named Mountain West Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday morning.
It's the first weekly honor for Zisswiller, who went 3-0 with one unfinished match over Nevada's victories over UNLV and San Diego State. The wins clinched for Nevada the outright Mountain West regular-season title, the Wolf Pack's first Mountain West men's tennis crown in program history. It was also Nevada's first conference title in men's tennis since 1982, when it shared the Big Sky title.
Zisswiller led Nevada with three victories last week, two coming in doubles. With doubles partner
Satchel Benn, Zisswiller clinched the doubles point for Nevada in each dual, first getting a 6-3 victory over UNLV's Christopher Bulus and Zach Garner Wednesday, then defeating San Diego State's Johannes Seeman and Roni Rikkonen, 7-6 (5), in a dramatic come-from-behind effort. Against Seeman and Rikkonen, Zisswiller and Benn stayed alive by forcing a tiebreaker when down 5-6, then, with the tiebreaker even at 5-5, reeled off two-straight points to clinch.
In singles play, Zisswiller led off Nevada's charge against the Aztecs with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Jules Auffray to put the Wolf Pack up 2-0. Against UNLV, he was leading Anton Ornberg, 6-2, 6-6 when the match was abandoned due to Nevada clinching the dual.
The Pack, the top seed at this weekend's Mountain West Men's Tennis Championship in Colorado Springs, has a first-round bye and will begin play in Saturday's semifinals. Nevada will play at 1 p.m. PT against the winner of Friday's quarterfinal between No. 4 San Diego State and host No. 5 Air Force.
