RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – Nevada women's golf begins its pursuit of a Mountain West Championship on Monday at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
Nevada heads to the Mountain West Championship after strong showings during the spring season, including a second-place finish at The Show at Spanish Trail hosted by rival UNLV. The performance at The Show included
Leah John's first-career individual title and career-low round (66).
The 2022 Mountain West Women's Golf Championship will take place April 18-20 on the par 72, 6,270-yard Dinah Shore Tournament Course at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California. Joining Nevada will be eight Mountain West teams including Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, New Mexico, San Diego State, San José State, UNLV, and Wyoming participating in the 54-hole tournament.
The Pack will enter a team of five golfers into the MW Championships with the quintet of
Victoria Gailey,
Leah John,
Anitra Khoth,
Kaitlin Fleiner, and
Kayla Nocum making up the team entry. Khoth set a career-low round of 68 at the Ram Classic in the Pack's fourth tournament of the season. Fleiner shot a career-low 71 at The Show at Spanish Trail in mid-February. Nevada recorded back-to-back second-place finishes at The Ram Classic (881) to end the fall campaign and The Show at Spanish Trail (873) to open the spring.
The Pack closed the regular season at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic, tying for fourth (886). Gailey posted the 13th top-10 finish of her career (3rd) with an even-par. John shot two-over with a 73 during the final round to close her tournament in fifth. Gailey led the Pack with a third-place finish in the 2021 Mountain West Championship, which is the second-highest finish for a Nevada women's golfer in program history. Gailey also finished fifth in the 2019 MW Championships.
This is the ninth Mountain West Championship that the Pack has competed in since joining the conference in 2012-13. Nevada finished second during the 2018-19 season for its highest finish at the event in program history. Gailey's third-place finish at the championships is the highest in program history since joining the conference.
Nevada enters the conference championship ranked 88th in the nation per GolfStat and is fifth in the Mountain West Conference with losses to San José State, UNLV, New Mexico, San Diego State, and wins over Fresno State, Colorado State, Boise State, and Wyoming.
The Pack has an average score of 80.78 heading into the conference tournament with an adjusted scoring average of 74.58 over eight tournaments this season.
The 2022 Mountain West Women's Golf first-round pairings were decided by the GolfStat head-to-head rankings as of Thursday, April 14. Teams 1, 4, and 7 shall be grouped together and have the first tee times; teams 2, 5, and 8 shall be grouped together and have the second set of tee times and teams 3, 6, and 9 shall have the final set of tee times.
The action gets underway on hole one with Nocum teeing off at 7:45 a.m. Fleiner begins at 7:54 a.m., Khoth opens play at 8:03 a.m., John gets the first round underway at 8:12 a.m., and Gailey begins her championship chase at 8:21 a.m. on Monday.
The Pack will play 18 holes each day during the three-day tournament.
