UP NEXT
Nevada takes its second, and final, bye of the season, following Monday's game. The Wolf Pack returns to action Sunday, Feb. 20, for Senior Day, hosting Colorado State at 2 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
Nevada bounced back into the win column Saturday, running out to an early lead and outlasting New Mexico, 77-70, at Lawlor Events Center. The win earned the Pack a split of the week's games.
Da'Ja Hamilton scored a team-high 21 points, going 5-for-9 from 3-point range, and passed out six assists to lead the Wolf Pack. Lexie Givens capped her strong week with a 16-point, eight-rebound effort, while Nia Alexander scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half, and Amaya West finished with 13.
The Pack ran out to a 13-0 lead, and led, 49-26, at halftime. New Mexico made its run in the second half, but the Pack held it off, with Hamilton and Kylie Jimenez (seven points, five assists) hitting free throws in the final minute to ice the game.
SCOUTING FRESNO STATE
Fresno State (9-13, 5-6 MW) is coming into Monday's game having dropped its last two, starting with last Saturday's 66-57 loss to the Pack in Reno. The Bulldogs fell, 61-58, Saturday at home to Wyoming.
The Bulldogs are led by twin sisters Haley Cavinder (19.1 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 5.73 apg) and Hanna Cavinder (14.4 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 3.45 apg), while Wytalla Motta (10.5 ppg) also averages double digits in scoring.
SEEING YOU AGAIN SO SOON
Monday's matchup will be the second in 10 days between the Wolf Pack and Bulldogs, with Nevada having captured the series opener, 66-57, Feb. 5 in Reno.
Nevada recovered from a 20-7 deficit after the opening quarter, cutting it down to six by the start of the fourth. That's where the Pack took control, outscoring the Bulldogs, 27-12, over the final 10 minutes. Aly Jimenez led the Pack with 15 points, while Da'Ja Hamilton and Lexie Givens each scored 13, and Audrey Roden added 11.
HUGE TOP-FIVE WIN
Saturday's win over New Mexico was Nevada's third over a team currently in the top five of the conference standings, as the Lobos entered the game second with an 11-2 mark.
The win also brought the Pack to within a game, in the loss column, of the Lobos for second place in the standings, and kept Nevada still in the hunt of the regular-season title. Nevada is currently three games back in the loss column of 11-1 UNLV, with one last matchup with the Rebels remaining (March 2).
FIRST-ROUND BYE IN SIGHT
Saturday's victory was critical also because it brought the Pack even closer to clinching a first-round bye at March 6-9's Mountain West Tournament. The Pack, currently at 8-4 in the standings with five games remaining, is two games ahead, in the loss column, of three teams logjammed at fifth place with six losses apiece: Colorado State (7-6), Air Force (7-6), and Fresno State (5-6).
A victory Monday over the Bulldogs would give Nevada the head-to-head tiebreaker over Fresno State, while the Pack already owns that advantage over Air Force.
