Preview
Nevada (0-0) will seek to win their 15th consecutive season opening contest Monday night, as they welcome an experienced Utah Tech team to the Lawlor Events Center.
The Wolf Pack return six players from last year's roster and have brought in a plethora of new talent to complement their strong returning core.
Nevada's talent was on full display during their exhibition win over Cal State East Bay on October 21, as 10 different players scored at least three points, including six different players scoring at least nine points.
Newcomer Jarod Lucas led the way for the Pack, knocking down 5-11 shots from the field, including 2-5 from behind the arc and a perfect 8-8 from the free-throw line, as he recorded a game-high 20 points in just over 21 minutes of playing time.Â
Returning senior Kenan Blackshear also had a stellar outing, during which he knocked down eight out of his 11 field goal attempts to finish with 18 points on the night.
The freshman duo of Trey Pettigrew and Darrion Williams had strong performances, combining to score 22 points on 8-13 shooting from the field, in addition to tallying a combined six steals, as they hope to make an immediate impact on the Wolf Pack program this season, beginning with a strong performance Monday night against the Trailblazers.Â
Junior Daniel Foster displayed an improved offensive game, knocking down all four of his field goal attempts, and recording a game-high seven assists. Foster will look to take on a bigger role for Nevada this year on the offensive and defensive side of the court.
Scouting Utah Tech
Utah Tech stands in the way of Nevada earning their 15th consecutive season opening victory. The Trailblazers did not play an exhibition contest this year; but, they return four starters and eight players from last season's team, including four of their top five leading scorers.
The Trailblazers finished the 2021-22 season with an overall record of 13-18 and a conference mark of 6-12.Â
Senior point guard Cameron Gooden highlights the returners for the Trailblazers. He finished the 2021-22 season ranked second on the team in scoring at 11.5 points per game, and first in assists, dishing out 3.6 per contest.
Senior forward Dancell Leter also returns for Utah Tech after finishing second on the team in rebounding last season (5.2 rpg)Â and third in scoring (10.3 ppg). Leter has the ability to space the floor and consistently knock down shots from behind the arc, as he shot 36.7 percent from three last year.
The Trailblazers play an uptempo style of basketball, and they will look to push the pace of the contest and knock down shots from three. Utah Tech attempted 20 or more 3-pointers in 23 games last season, and they currently own a streak of 141 consecutive contests in which they have connected on at least one shot from behind the arc.
