HENDERSON, Nev. -Â Nevada Women's Golf's goal to bring its immensely successful fall season to a strong close got off to a promising start Sunday, as the Pack closed the opening round of The Clash at Boulder Creek with an eight-stroke lead over the rest of the 17-team field.
The Pack posted three below-par scoring rounds, led by
Leah John's 68 (-4) which shares the top spot on the individual leaderboard after 18 holes. Along with
Victoria Gailey's 70 and
Anitra Khoth's 71, Nevada cruised to a four-under 284 for the day, eight strokes ahead of second-place UTEP.
John goes into Monday's second round tied with Idaho's Yvonne Vinceri for the lead, while Gailey is among three players tied for fourth. Khoth, at one-under, is tied for seventh.
John, starting the first round at the par-5 No. 2, opened with a birdie. She went on to card five birdies on the day, including two on par-3s. Gailey, meanwhile, played a bogey-free round with birdies at Nos. 5 and 14. The second hole of the course provedÂ
Gabby Kano finished the day at 75, with
Kaitlin Fleiner coming in at 77 in her first tournament round of the campaign.
Raesa Sheikh, competing as an individual, shot a 78.
The field will tee off at 8 a.m., in a shotgun start, for Monday's second round.
