PROVO, Utah – Playing in its final event of the regular season, the Nevada men's golf team placed 10
th at the PING Cougar Classic, hosted by BYU.
The Wolf Pack posted its best team score of the tournament, and one of the top rounds of the day, with an 11-under par round of 277. That team score bumped Nevada up one position on the team leaderboard and into the top 10 in the 19-team field. For the tournament the Pack finished at 7-under par and placed ahead of UNLV and Air Force with the Mountain West Championship looming next week. No. 28 San Francisco ran away with the team title, finishing at an impressive 41-under par and with a 13-shot victory over runner-up Boise State.
All four of Nevada's counting scores in the final round were under par rounds, led by a 6-under 66 from
Sam Harned. Harned bounced back in a big way from a 77 in round two to record one of the lowest rounds of the tournament. He had a near perfect round of golf on Saturday, making seven birdies to just one bogey on No. 18. Harned's round of 66 allowed him to jump 30 spots on the individual leaderboard and into a tie for 39
th in the 104-player field.
Brendan MacDougall notched the other Pack round in the 60s in the final round, putting together a 3-under 69. MacDougall collected six birdies today and moved up eight spots to finish in a tie for 32
nd at 2-under for the tournament.
Joining MacDougall in a tie for 32
nd place was
Peyton Callens, who was arguably the most consistent Wolf Pack golfer this week. Callens also finished at 2-under for the tournament after putting rounds of 72-71-71 together in the last two days. Across his three rounds of play he totaled 10 birdies and an eagle. The other under par round for the Pack on Saturday came from
Trey Davis, who carded a 1-under 71 to vastly improve on his 79 in the second round. Davis finished the event at 6-over par overall and tied for 73
rd.
Sam Meek posted a 2-over 74 on the final day and tied for 51
st place.
Mitch Abbott, who was entered as an individual, finished in 103
rd place.
BYU's Carson Lundell and San Francisco's Tim Widing earned co-medalist honors as they both finished the event at 13-under par and with a one-shot victory.
Nevada will now turn its attention towards the upcoming Mountain West Championship, which will be held next Friday and Saturday at OMNI Tucson National in Tucson, Ariz.
