Game Preview: San José State

RENO, Nev. – The Nevada women's basketball team goes for its second consecutive road win as it will face the Spartans of San José State this Saturday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. from the Event Center.

The Wolf Pack is coming off of a 71-67 come-from-behind road win at Air Force on Wednesday, which snapped a seven-game road losing streak. Sophomore Essence Booker was terrific for Nevada in that game, scoring a team-high 17 points, which included a 3-of-5 night from behind the arc. Booker has now scored in double figures in six straight games, averaging 15.5 points per game in that stretch. Freshman Alyssa Jimenez also put on a great all-around performance as she totaled a career-high 13 points and added six rebounds. Jimenez came up big for the Pack at the end of the game as well, getting a deflection on the Falcons' final possession of the game with her team ahead by just two.

The Spartans also had a streak snapped their last time out, a six-game winning streak when they lost 80-45 last Saturday at Wyoming. Despite that loss SJSU still remains the league's second place team, sitting at 9-2 in conference action. With Nevada's win on Wednesday, the Pack jumped from ninth to a tie for seventh in the league standings.

ON THE AIR
Doug Greenwald will have the call in Northern Nevada on CBS Sports Radio 94.1 FM and 1450 AM with a 20 minute pregame show prior to tipoff. Fans can also tune in to listen to Greenwald's broadcast online at TuneIn.com or via the TuneIn app.

The game will also be live streamed on the Mountain West Network.

SERIES HISTORY
Nevada and San José State have played about as even of an all-time series as you can have. Entering Saturday's contest, the Spartans have a slight edge in the all-time series, 26-25. SJSU snapped a two-game losing streak to the Wolf Pack a month ago, but Nevada is still 3-2 against the Spartans in the Amanda Levens era. San José State however is currently second in the conference with a 9-2 record in league action, is 15-7 overall and is third in the conference in scoring offense at 76.1 points per game.

CAPTURE THE ESSENCE
Sophomore Essence Booker has been on fire in the last six games. The Las Vegas native is averaging 15.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game in her last six outings. The last three games in particular have been kind to Booker as she totaled 17 points in the win over Colorado State, added 19 against Boise State, two shy from tying her career high, and posted 17 in the win at Air Force. Her 19 points against the Broncos marked her highest scoring output since she scored 21 on Nov. 9. In the last three games Booker is shooting 48.7 percent from the field and over 47.1 percent from beyond the arc.

MAR OH MAR
Senior Marguerite Effa has really picked up her play as of late. The Los Angeles, Calif. native had the game of her career vs. SJSU. Effa totaled 31 points and 15 rebounds, both of which are career highs, to post her second double-double of the season. She was nearly unstoppable as she connected on 71.4 percent of her shots, hitting 15-of-21, setting career highs there too. Effa is just the sixth player in the Mountain West this season to score 30+ points in a single game. She is the only player to score 30+ points in a single game and record a double-double while doing so. Effa has now scored in double figures in six of her last nine games and is averaging 15.7 points per game in that span.

CAN YOU ASSIST ME?
The Wolf Pack has been one of the best teams in the Mountain West in terms of sharing the basketball. Heading into Saturday's game against SJSU, Nevada ranks fifth in the conference in assists per game, averaging 14.04 per game. The Pack has dished out at least 10 assists in all but three of its 23 games, including a 20-assist game at Portland State. Nevada is led in the assist department by one of its rookies in Jená Williams, who has 58 on the year. Williams was dynamite in the team's game against Boise State, dishing out a season-high eight assists to zero turnovers. She has 14 assists to two turnovers in her last three games. Additionally, Williams ranks 13th in the MW averaging 2.75 assists per game in league play.

MILESTONE WATCH
Nevada has a few players who are approaching milestones, some of whom could hit those numbers Saturday afternoon at SJSU.

Imani Lacy - 5 rebounds shy of 200; 5 points shy of 400
Jacqulynn Nakai - 22 points shy of 100
Essence Booker - 2 assists shy of 100
Amaya West - 33 points shy of 200

DON'T FORGET ABOUT IMANI
Sophomore Imani Lacy has quietly been one of the most consistent Wolf Pack players through 23 games this season. In the Pack's home game against Boise State, Lacy posted the second 20-point game of her career, and first this season, after scoring a game and career-high 28 points. Lacy was terrific in that game, hitting 8-of-14 from the field and 12-of-14 from the free throw line, both which were career highs. She has been especially impressive this season with her free throw shooting and shot blocking. Lacy currently ranks third in the conference in blocks per game at 1.37, and ranks eighth in the league in free throw shooting, hitting 70.4 percent.

UP NEXT: SILVER STATE SERIES PT. 2
After it wraps up this two-game road swing, the Wolf Pack will return home next week to welcome in-state rival UNLV to town for its second Silver State Series matchup of the season. The Pack and Lady Rebels played a tight game down in Las Vegas last month, with UNLV emerging victorious on a buzzer beater at the end of regulation. The two rivals will tipoff from Lawlor Events Center next Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m. in a blackout game.
