RENO, Nev. – Just two days after its last competition, the Nevada men's golf team is back in action at one of the nation's top events, The Goodwin, hosted by Stanford.
The three-day event begins on Thursday with the first 18 holes and will conclude with the final round of 18 holes on Saturday from Stanford Golf Course. This is the Wolf Pack's fourth consecutive season competing in this event with finishes of 12th in each of the last three seasons. The field features some of the toughest competition in the nation as 13 of the 26 teams enter the weekend ranked in the top 50, including five in the top 25. Oklahoma carries the highest ranking of all 26 teams at No. 5.
The Goodwin, formally known as the United State Intercollegiate, has a rich history since its start in 1968. Tournament-host Stanford has claimed 15 team victories and 15 individual titles at its event, the most of any program in each category. The Cardinal won two team titles in a row in 2013 and 2014, but last year's event was claimed by the Sooners of Oklahoma.
The Wolf Pack is coming off of a fifth place showing at the Duck Invitational, its sixth top five of the season. Junior
Sam Meek led Nevada in that event, earning a top five himself with sole possession of fourth. Meek is playing some of his best golf of the season right now, with a win and a top five in his last two events. He will be joined on the course this week by the same four that competed in the Duck Invitational; junior
Stephen Osborne, sophomores
Joey Vrzich and
Sam Harned and freshman
Trey Davis.
Live scoring for the entire tournament will be available on GolfStat.com.
