SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Nevada track and field team completed day one of Sacramento State's Hornet Invitational today. Making her Wolf Pack debut in the heptathlon was freshman Anna Sommerfeld, who leads the heptathlon.
"We were happy for Anna to get a chance to compete," said assistant coach Scott Williamson, who oversees the multis."She has only been training since January after being out multiple months with an illness. I think once she gets a few more opportunities she will improve dramatically."
In the first leg of the heptathlon, Sommerfeld topped the field in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.98 seconds. The time put her in first in the heptathlon with a point total of 844, and she would not look back after that.
The native of Brandenburg, Germany followed up the performance with a max height of 4' 9.5" (1.46 m) in the high jump to finish second. The height earned her 577 points to hold onto first place in the heptathlon and pull away from Robinson who had 1221 after a fourth-place finish in the high jump.
Through the shot put, Sommerfeld stayed in first place with a toss of 30' 9.25" (9.38 m). The 489 points brought her total to 2705, extending her lead over the second-place Robinson.
In the final heptathlon event of day one, Sommerfeld took second in the 200m. The 795 points put her total at 2705 to lead the event. Sommerfeld will look to finish strong tomorrow with the long jump, javelin and 800m.
The Pack also had four competitors in the hammer throw. Freshman Grace Wills took ninth overall with a max distance of 14' 11" (45.70 m), followed by junior Taylor Forte in 15th with a distance of 138' 6" (42.23 m). Kylee Stevens-Sam finished 40th overall with a 105' 10" (32.26 m) toss. In 44th place was sophomore Tina Lao with a throw of 99' 11" (30.45 m).
"I was really happy for Grace to make the finals in her first ever hammer competition," said Williamson. "Just under 150' her first time, and she still has lots of room to improve."
The final event of the day was the 200m dash. Freshman Emily Costello took fourth overall with a time of 24.24, while sophomore Lauren Green and junior Karoline Sauer took 21st and 22nd with respective times of 25.36 and 25.37. Sophomore Gifty Nkansah took 37th with a time of 25.86.
