RENO, Nev. – The Nevada women's basketball team looks to continue its hot start and stay perfect on the young season as it takes its 3-0 record to Portland State this Saturday.
The Wolf Pack's 3-0 start is its first since the 2010-11 season. If Nevada can score a second consecutive road victory this weekend, it would mark the program's first 4-0 start since the records began in the early 80s.
Nevada and Portland State will tipoff at 12 p.m. PT from Viking Pavilion in Portland, Ore. this Saturday, Nov. 23. The Vikings are the defending Big Sky champions but enter Saturday's contest with a 1-3 record.
ON THE AIR
Doug Greenwald will have the call in Northern Nevada on CBS Sports Radio 94.1 FM and 1450 AM with a 20 minute pregame show prior to tipoff. Fans can also tune in to listen to Greenwald's broadcast online at TuneIn.com or via the TuneIn app.
The game will also be live streamed on PlutoTV.
SISTER, SISTER
Freshman
Alyssa Jimenez, who has played a big role for the Pack three games into her rookie season, will square off against her older sister, Kylie, on Saturday. Kylie is a junior guard for the Vikings who leads the team in assists and is averaging 10.8 points per game.
SERIES HISTORY
The all-time series between Nevada and Portland State is one that began in the 1990-91 season, but has only spanned nine games. The Wolf Pack has a slight edge in the series, winning five of the nine games. The last win for the Pack was also the last time these two teams played one another back in November of 2017 when Nevada defeated the Vikings 67-55. It marked the first win at Nevada for head coach
Amanda Levens.
CAPTURE THE ESSENCE
Essence Booker has been on a tear to start her sophomore season. The Las Vegas native has scored in double figures in all three games, leading the Wolf Pack in scoring in all three as well. She enters the weekend ranked third in the Mountain West in scoring, averaging 18.0 points per game, and is fourth in field goal percentage, shooting 52.9 percent from the field, which is second in the league among guards. After a phenomenal opening week Booker earned the first MW Player of the Week award of her career. She poured in a career-high 21 points in the win over Sacramento State, the first 20-point game of her career.
NEWCOMER IMPACT
With eight newcomers on this year's roster and just five returners, the impact of the newcomers was inevitably going to be big. That impact has been felt largely through the first three games of the season. Nevada is still getting significant contributions from its returners, led by
Essence Booker and
Imani Lacy, but a few of the newcomers have made their presence known as well.
Of the eight newcomers, four have scored in double figures three games into the season. Senior
Marguerite Effa leads that category having scored a career-high 18 points in the win over Sacramento State. She also added 12 rebounds to post the team's first double-double of the year. Juniors
Miki'ala Maio and
Nia Alexander, along with freshman
Dom Phillips have also reached double figures. Phillips was the latest to post the feat, chipping in 14 points at Utah Valley, her first time scoring in double figures in college.
DON'T FORGET ABOUT IMANI
The Wolf Pack has had two players score in double figures in the first three games, with
Essence Booker capturing conference player of the week honors last week. But fellow sophomore
Imani Lacy has been equally as strong, posting 13 points in the season opener, 14 in the win over Sacramento State and 10 at Utah Valley. Lacy currently leads the team in field goal percentage, hitting 53.8 percent from the field. She had one of her best games at the free throw line vs. Sacramento State as well, knocking down 6-of-8, and grabbed a season-high seven rebounds, one shy of tying her career high.
UP NEXT: NUGGET CLASSIC
Nevada returns home to Lawlor Events Center next weekend to host its annual post-Thanksgiving Nugget Classic. The Wolf Pack will kick off the tournament on Friday, Nov. 29 at 2 p.m. against Chicago State. UC Santa Barbara and Stephen F. Austin will follow the Pack and Cougars at 4:30 p.m. The two-day tournament will conclude on Sunday, Dec. 1 with Chicago State taking either UCSB or Stephen F. Austin at 11 a.m. and Nevada taking on the other at 2 p.m.
Chicago State is currently 0-5 on the year, with one game to be played this weekend before making the trip to Reno. UC Santa Barbara knocked off Pac-12 member USC its last time out and is 2-2 on the year with two games remaining before next weekend. Stephen F. Austin's next set of games will be in the Nugget Classic and will enter the tournament with a 2-2 record.
