Men’s golf fall recap

RENO, Nev. – It was a busy, yet productive, 2019 fall season for the Nevada men's golf team as the Wolf Pack competed in six events in a two-month span.

The fall was one of the busiest in recent memory for the Wolf Pack as it started its season on Sept. 8 and concluded on Oct. 30, with six total events played in that time frame. In those six events, one of which was a two-team event against Oregon State, the Pack posted three top five finishes and four top 10s. Nevada combined for a team scoring average of 285.25, which is on pace to set the single season program record, which currently stands at 287.44 and was set last season.

Nevada posted its best finish of the fall campaign twice, placing third at the Husky Invitational and the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational. Perhaps more notable than where the team finished however, is the fact that the Pack finished under par in five of its six events. The only event where it did not finish under par was the two-team Wolf Pack Shootout the team hosted against Oregon State at Montreux Country Club. It marked the first event hosted by Nevada since 2011.

On an individual level the Wolf Pack was led all fall by senior Sam Harned, who was the top Nevada finisher in five of the six events. Harned is in the midst of a career season having averaged 70.0 strokes per round in the fall, which is on pace to set the single season scoring record. The Rocklin, Calif. native earned his first collegiate win to open the season, taking the title at the Badger Invitational at 12-under par. He was subsequently named the Mountain West Golfer of the Month following his win.

Harned collected three top five finishes in the fall and played the six events at an incredible 29-under par overall. In all, 14 of his 16 rounds played were at par or better with a low of 64 and a high of just 73. He added 60 birdies and two eagles to his fall season as well.

Nevada also saw strong individual contributions from its other two seniors, Tony Gil and Sam Meek. Gil is having one of his best seasons of his career as well having averaged 71.68 strokes per round. He also played the fall season under par, finishing at 2-under overall and collected a career-best tie for fourth in the Wolf Pack Shootout. Meek averaged 72.0 strokes per round and led the team with 62 birdies. He posted two top 10 finishes, including a season-best tie for fifth at the Husky Invitational.

The other consistent presence in the Wolf Pack lineup was sophomore Trey Davis, who posted a scoring average of 73.68 in his 16 rounds played. Davis, Harned, Gil and Meek were the only players to compete in all six events this fall, with the fifth spot rotating between a handful of newcomers. Sophomores Peyton Callens and Cam Kellett, along with redshirt freshman Mitch Abbott and freshman Connor Motherway all saw time this fall, led by four appearances by Callens.

Nevada will return to the course to begin its spring season March 6-7 at the Jackrabbit Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev.
