LAS VEGAS – The Nevada softball team put together a comeback bid on Saturday, but its effort was not enough as the team fell to UNLV by a score of 7-6. The Wolf Pack (19-23, 8-11 MW) found itself down by four heading into the sixth and plated five to take a one-run lead but a two-run bottom of the inning from the Rebels (26-16, 8-9 MW) proved to be the difference in the game.
Nevada had a pair of players record multiple hits on the day as sophomores
Sadaria McAlister and
Jyllian Ahart both had two hits. Sophomore
Sierra Mello scored three times in the game, falling one short of her career-high.
After the Rebels plated a pair of runs in the first inning, the Wolf Pack came right back and cut the lead in the half, courtesy of a base hit from freshman
Lauren Gutierrez that scored Mello to make the game 2-1. UNLV responded with three unanswered runs of the their own over the next four innings to push the lead to 5-1 heading into the sixth before the Pack's offense came alive.
The five-run explosion began with Ahart singling up the middle for her second of two hits on the day. Following an error from the UNLV first baseman that allowed freshman
Jessica Sellers to reach base, Mello came up and recorded a single of her own to loaded the bases with just one out in the inning.
Sophomore
Haley Burda continued her hot trend of late and singled to right field to score Ahart and trim the lead to three runs. Junior
Jennifer Purcell then came off the bench and recorded a sacrifice fly and RBI for the Pack's second run of the inning.
With a pair of runs already cashed in, McAlister continued the rally with her rocket of a single to centerfield, allowing Mello to cross the plate from second. Nevada then tied the game, courtesy of a two-out base hit from sophomore
Kenzi Goins in which her single up the middle, scored junior
Ali Tedford, who pinch-ran fro Burda.
The Pack's first lead of the game came immediately after Goins' single as senior
Erika Hansen reached on an error from the Rebels, scoring McAlister on the play to give Nevada a 6-5 advantage. In the bottom of the seventh, UNLV responded with a couple of runs after a two-run home run from the Rebels proved to be the difference, as UNLV took the game 7-6.
Nevada will be back in action on Sunday for the series finale against UNLV as the Wolf Pack faces the Rebels at noon.
