RENO, Nev. – The Mountain West office announced Monday that Nevada (9-8, 1-3 MW) will be the eighth seed in the MW Championship and face ninth-seed New Mexico (9-10, 2-3 MW) in the first round. The match will take place in Boise, Idaho Thursday at 9 a.m. PST, with the winner moving on to face top-seed UNLV.
The last time the Wolf Pack won a MW Championship match was against Boise State in 2015, when it defeated the Broncos 4-2. Nevada lost to the Lobos that season 4-1 in the second round of the MW Championship.
The Pack comes into the contest with a 53-43 mark in singles matches in the spring, with a 10-14 record against conference opponents. Four members of the Pack are tied for a team-high two conference victories in singles, including freshman Maria Tatarnikova who has not lost in conference play. Tatarnikova is also on a team-high five-match win streak.
Freshmen Melissa Huchet and Lili Fekete lead Nevada with 11 singles victories this season, with Huchet boasting a 7-1 record on court No. 4. Fekete has emerged victorious in eight of her past 10 matches.
Nevada has been nearly unbeatable in doubles play against MW foes, boasting an 8-2 record and winning the doubles point in all four MW contests. Seniors Claudia Herrero and Blaga Delic are ranked as the No. 61 doubles tandem by the ITA as of April 17, and boast a 2-0 record in MW play.
The Lobos will challenge the Pack as the No. 9 seed in the tournament and look to snap their three-match losing streak. All tournament coverage can be found here.
