RENO, Nev. - Coming off a record-shattering performance Friday at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, redshirt freshman distance runner Morgin Coonfield has been named this week's Bradley, Drendel & Jeanney Student-Athlete of the Week.
Coonfield clocked a time of 34:45.86 in the 10,000 meter, breaking the previous record by almost 13 seconds. Her time currently sits eighth in the Mountain West, 24th in the West Region and 44th in the entire country.
Leading for 15 laps until being passed by Southern Oregon's Jessa Perkinson, Coonfield was cooking around the track. It wasn't until 4 and a half laps to go that Perkinson made her move. Coonfield, slipping back, hit the jets in the final 800 meters, expending any of the energy she had left after the 30-plus minute race. Chasing the SOU runner until the end propelled Coonfield to her record-time finish of 34:45.86 to become the most dominate 10,000 meter runner in Nevada Wolf Pack history. The previous record, set by All-American Emily Myers in 2015, sat at 34:58.09.
Each week while teams are in season, the Nevada Wolf Pack will named one Student-Athlete of the Week based on the previous week's performance.
