DAVIS, Calif. – In what turned out to be a pitcher's duel, the Nevada softball team concluded the second day of the UC Davis tournament with a 3-1 loss to Valparaiso on Friday. Heading into Saturday's final day of the weekend, the Wolf Pack sits at 10-12 on the year as the Crusaders moved to 10-6.
Sophomore
Sierra Mello led Nevada with two hits on the day, while her classmates
Kenzi Goins and
Sadaria McAlister were responsible for the Pack's lone run of the game. In the circle, freshman
Julia Jensen tossed her 10
th complete game of the season and struck out seven batters in the process.
After McAlister led the game off with a single to the shortstop and reached second on a wild pitch, Goins came up to the plate and chopped a base hit of her own up the middle to score McAlister and give the Pack an early 1-0 lead. With a one-run advantage, Jensen kept the Crusaders to just one hit through the first three innings, where she retired the Valpo hitters in order in the third frame.
The Crusaders broke through Nevada's tough defense and scored three times in the fourth to take a two-run lead, which proved to be the difference in the game as they held and took home the 3-1 victory. Nevada will wrap up its weekend in Davis on Saturday with a matchup against Northern Colorado at 1 p.m. PT.
