Jensen near perfect as Nevada suffers pair of losses

LAS VEGAS – Freshman Julia Jensen put together a bid for a perfect game against Seattle U on Saturday, but the Nevada softball team fell to the Redhawks 2-1 in the Wolf Pack's second game of the day. Earlier in the day, Nevada dropped its game against Iowa State (5-4) by a score of 6-5. Heading into Sunday's final day of the Desert Classic, the Pack sits at 3-6 on the year.

Jensen began the game against Seattle U (6-2) by retiring the first 12 batters she faced but a leadoff double in the bottom of the fifth broke up her bid for not only a perfect game but a no-hitter as well. After an error from Nevada caused the Redhawks to score and tie the game at one apiece, Jensen bounced back in the sixth for her fifth perfect inning of the game.

The Wolf Pack made noise in the top of the seventh, placing its first two runners on base, however three consecutive strikeouts from Nevada kept the score knotted at one. In the bottom of the seventh, Nevada committed two errors that allowed Seattle U to claim the 2-1 victory. Jensen finished the game allowing just one hit and struck out five batters, while throwing just 87 pitches in the process.

Against the Cyclones, the Pack found itself in hole after the third inning when Iowa State crossed the plate four times to claim a 4-0 lead. However, Nevada responded quickly in the top of the fourth courtesy of a two out grand slam from freshman Jessica Sellers to even the score a four. The long ball marked the third of the season for Sellers and her second in as many days.

After Iowa State reclaimed a 5-4 lead, Nevada tied the score once again in the top of fifth when senior Aaliyah Gibson doubled home sophomore Kenzi Goins with a hard hit ball into right-centerfield. The Cyclones later scored another run in the bottom of the sixth, which proved to be the difference as Iowa State took the 6-5 win.

Nevada will conclude its weekend at the Desert Classic with a matchup with Florida International on Sunday. First pitch for that game is scheduled for 9 a.m. PT.
