Nevada women’s tennis set to begin season at Cal Invitational

RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada women's tennis team will begin its fall season this Friday at the Cal Invitational. The Wolf Pack finished last season 8-10 and sixth in the Mountain West with a 2-2 conference record.

"The players have been practicing really hard and we cannot wait to compete," said head coach Guillaume Tonelli. "The Cal Berkeley invitational is a great tournament to discover what college tennis is about for our freshmen, and to get ready for our regionals tournament in a couple of weeks. After having Claudia in the ITA Oracle Masters tournament, we cannot wait to represent the University of Nevada this weekend. We are very excited for this coming season, and can't wait to show our community what we are capable of."

In his seventh season coaching the team, Tonelli will have 10 players on his roster with six being newcomers. The four returning members includes senior Claudia Herrero, who was named the Mountain West Player of the Year and named to the All-Mountain West singles team last season. Herrero went 2-2 in the ITA Masters and advanced to the semifinals in the consolation bracket this past weekend.

Also returning is senior Blaga Delic, who was named all-conference in doubles last season, set the record for most doubles victories in Nevada history with 44 alongside former Nevada star Sheila Morales.

The six newcomers that the Wolf Pack are welcoming this season include four freshmen and two Purdue transfers, Grace Schaffer and Marta Ruedas. The Pack has an even split of five upper and five lowerclassmen on their roster for the 2017-18 season.

There are 12 schools participating in the tournament this weekend that will run from Friday until Sunday. A livestream of the matches played on the Hellman courts will be available here.
