AURORA, Ore. – Nevada women's golf senior
Celyn Khoo is in striking distance for the individual title after 36 holes at the Rose City Collegiate, hosted by Portland State.
"We played really well the second round. I think we learned where to be to take advantage of scoring opportunities during the first round, which led to a ton of birdies in the afternoon," said head coach
Kathleen Takaishi. "I'm very proud of this team for hanging in there and grinding through a great round today. This should give them a lot of confidence as we head into tomorrow's final round."
Khoo was steady all day long, shooting two rounds under par with a 70 in round one and a 71 in round two. She enters Tuesday's final round at 3-under par and in a tie for second, just two shots behind the individual leader Tara Finigan of Portland State. Khoo kept it simple on the course, making just six birdies through her two rounds, but did not get into much trouble. There was nothing worse than a bogey on both of her scorecards, and just three of them at that.
As a team the Wolf Pack had a huge turnaround from the morning session to the afternoon session. Earlier in the day, Nevada carded a team score of 297 (+9) but in the afternoon posted the sixth-best team score in program history, a 2-under 286. The Pack sits in third in the 14-team field, three shots behind second place Portland State and nine shots back of team leader Cal Poly. Nevada played exceptionally well on the par 5s, coming in at 4-under on the day. The Pack also ranked second in the field with 27 birdies made.
Multiple players made significant strides in their game from the first round to the second, but none more than junior
Kaitlin Collom, who is tied for 20
th in the 75-player field. Collom grinded through the early morning session to post a 7-over 79 but shaved 10 strokes off of that score in the afternoon to post a 3-under 69, tying her career low. She made just one birdie in the opening 18 holes but followed that up by making six in the second set of 18. In her last round of the day she played the back nine flawlessly at 3-under with no blemishes.
Junior
Chaithra Katamneni recorded a solid outing in the morning with a 1-over 73, with nothing more than a bogey on her scorecard. A couple of bad holes in the afternoon, though she still made four birdies, led her to shoot 76. She enters the final day tied for 26
th. Her teammate
Jordan Keyser is also tied for 26
th after firing the same scores as Katamneni just reversed. Sophomore
Jenny Krause struggled in round one with a score of 78 but came back strong in round two with a 1-over 73. She did not make worse than a bogey through her 36 holes of action today. She is tied for 36
th.
Nevada concludes the Rose City Collegiate tomorrow morning with the final 18 holes. Live scoring is available on GolfStat.com.
