RENO, Nev. - Nevada's
Michael Ball and
Eric Valdez were honored Monday for their efforts over the Wolf Pack's third-straight series win this past weekend, being named Mountain West Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
The Wolf Pack (9-6) took two of three at San Francisco, sealing the series win with a 5-1 victory in Sunday's rubber game. Nevada finishes the road wraparound weekend tonight at 6 p.m. at Sacramento State.
Ball batted .500 over the series, going 7-for-14 with three home runs, including a game-winning, ninth-inning grand slam in Friday's 7-6 win. Ball homered and had at least two hits in each game of the series, hitting a solo shot Saturday then going deep with a two-run homer Sunday, adding seventh-inning insurance runs in the Pack victory.
Valdez picked up his second relief win of the season in Sunday's win. The Reno native came on with one out in the third inning and the Wolf Pack leading 3-1, and tossed 5.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out seven and allowing just two hits. Valdez ended his outing strong, retiring nine of the final 10 batters he faced with five strikeouts from the sixth through eighth innings.
Following Monday's non-conference game at Sacramento State, Nevada begins Mountain West play on the road this coming weekend, traveling to Fresno State for a three-game set beginning Friday at 6:05 p.m.
