Reno, Nev. - Nevada Men's Golf kicked off the Pearl at Kalauao Invitational Wednesday in a 36 hole day one shortened by darkness, finishing day one's play in 1st place, following a -9 total through 34 holes. The Pack leads the field in birdies and par-5 scoring. The Pack will return at 9:30am tomorrow to complete round two and then play round three.
Ben Ortwein led the way for the Wolf Pack on day one, finishing the round in 2nd place at five under-par. Ortwein's posted a first round of two under-par 70, a round highlighted by five birdies offset by two bogies. Ortwein's second round included four birdies and an eagle and he sits at three under and in 2nd place prior to the completion of round two. Ortwein leads the field in par-5 scoring average at 4.13.
Supakit (Oak) Seelanagae played a hot first round, rattling off six birdies offset by one bogey en route to an opening round 67 (-5). Seelanagae cooled off slightly in round two but maintained his birdie making form, making three birdies on the bounce on 16,17 and 18. Seelanagae sits in 5th prior to the completion of the second round.
Liam Gobin and
Jonathan Kim sit in a tie for 32nd at the conclusion of play on day one both sitting at two over-par. Kim played his first round in one over-par 73 that was colorful, including four birdies and an eagle, offset by four bogeys and a triple. In the second round Kim has made five birdies offset by four bogeys and a double to sit one over for the round at the conclusion of play. Gobin played a relatively clean first round, making one birdie offset by a bogey and a triple posting a 75 (+3). Gobin showed fight in round two, making five birdies offset by four bogies to sit at one under for round two at the conclusion of play.
Rounding out the Pack starting five was
Aaron Leach, who posted a birdie heavy round of two under-par round one, that included six birdies offset by two bogies and a double. Leach has made three birdies so far in round two but has struggled to keep a clean card, sitting five over-par for the round at the conclusion of play, he sits in 38th.
Individually,
Riki Matsumoto played a strong round one, posting a clean two under-par 70 that included three birdies offset by one bogey. At the conclusion of play Matsumoto sits at one over-par for round two and in 12th at one under-par.
Monte Chumchaivate struggled in round one, posting a six over-par 78. He showed fight in round two, making two birdies and sitting at two over for the round at the conclusion of play.
The Pack return for the completion of round two and three tomorrow, looking for success to end the fall season.
