SERIES HISTORY
Nevada leads the all-time series with San José State, 23-12-2, although the Spartans have taken three of the last four meetings. San José State's recent run of success has come after Nevada won 15 of 17 contests from 2002-19. Saturday's meeting is the first meeting between the teams in Reno since the Wolf Pack's 27-24 victory in 2021.
ABOUT SAN JOSÉ STATE
San José State comes into the weekend following a 26-16 loss to Air Force.
The Spartans bring the country's top passing offense to Reno this weekend, averaging 332.6 passing yards per game. That attack is led by quarterback Walter Eget, who has thrown for a national-best 2,941 yards and 17 touchdowns against just five interceptions. Eget's top target is wide receiver Danny Scudero, the FBS leader in receiving yards with 1,126 with 68 receptions and 10 touchdowns, the latter total being second in the country.
Defensively, Jordan Pollard is San José State's top tackler with 71, including 2.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles-for-loss. Vili Taufatofua leads the Spartan defense in both sacks 4.0) and TFLs (6.5) along with two forced fumbles. In the secondary, Jalen Bainer paces the Spartans with three interceptions and another five passes broken up.
LABARBARA CHASING NEVADA, MOUNTAIN WEST RECORDS
Junior defensive lineman Dylan LaBarbara is making a run at the Nevada and Mountain West marks for tackles-for-loss with three games remaining. LaBarbera, at 15.5 TFLs, is well within striking distance of both Nevada's and the Mountain West's single-season records--he is just 6.5 back of Dontay Moch's Nevada benchmark of 22.0 TFL (2010), and 5.0 back of the MW mark of 20.5, shared by three different players.
LaBarbera remains the national leader in total TFLs per game (1.72) and is second in total TFLs (15.5), while ranking 20th in the nation with 6.5 sacks.
SMALLEY THE SPECIAL-TEAMS ACE
Gardnerville native and senior linebacker
Chris Smalley has been a prime example of the Northern Nevada ethos of hard, blue-collar work during his four years with the Wolf Pack. From playing multiple positions on both sides of the line based on team need, Smalley has proudly represented the local community with his play and his work ethic.
Saturday at Utah State, he again proved his worth as Nevada's special-teams ace, pushing through the Aggie punt line to block a second-half punt. It was Smalley's first blocked punt, and the Wolf Pack's first since 2022. It was the second impact play he's has on special teams this season, as his hustle and timing forced a muff punt and another Wolf Pack takeover deep in opposing territory Oct. 18 at New Mexico.
RAMSEUR FINDS THE END ZONE AGAIN
Running back
Caleb Ramseur found the end zone once again for Nevada Saturday night, hauling in a 41-yard touchdown pass from Chubb Purdy.
Ramseur was one of the Wolf Pack's top offensive performers on the night, finishing with three catches for 57 yards and a touchdown, and rushing for 43 yards on eight carries. For the year, he leads the Pack with four touchdowns (two rush, two receiving), along with topping the team in rushing yards (372) and all-purpose yardage (572).
CARPENTER LEADING THE WAY ON OFFENSE
Tight end
Jett Carpenter led the Wolf Pack in receiving once again Saturday at Utah State, and reached the end zone for the first time as a member of the Pack. Carpenter finished the game with four catches for 58 yards including a 34-yard touchdown grab from
Chubba Purdy.
On the year, Carpenter, a sixth-year transfer from Eastern Washington, leads Nevada's receivers with both 26 catches and 286 yards, with one touchdown.
