Erin, Wis. - Nevada Men's Golf kicked off round one of the Marquette Intercollegiate Sunday, finishing the round in 6th following a +23 team total of 311. There was not a single player in the field under-par in round one, something seen very rarely in college golf. The scoring average for the field was 79.55.
Leading the way for the Pack was
Aaron Leach who posted a round one 77 (+5). Leach had a very solid start, sitting even-par through thirteen holes before struggling on his final five holes. Leach's round places him in a tie for 17th after round one. Also tied for 17th at +5 is
Ben Ortwein, who played relatively solid golf all day, barring the triple bogey made on tricky par-3 number nine. Ortwein made two birdies on the day and like Leach, will look to clean his card up more tomorrow.Â
Next best for the Wolf Pack was freshman
Riki Matsumoto who posted a 78 (+6). Matsumoto made two birdies on the day with one coming on his final hole, to come in in even-par 36, the best back nine score for the Pack on day one.
The Pack's final counting score came from
Liam Gobin, who played relatively solid on the day, making three birdies on the day. Gobin's round was undone by a triple-bogey on his last hole of the day, but his birdie making ability will give him confidence heading into the final round. Gobin's round was matched by teammate
Supakit (Oak) Seelanagae, who struggled on the front nine, but fought to a cleaner back nine, birdieing his final hole to post a back nine 37 (+1).Â
Individually
Jonathan Kim posted a ten over-par 82 and Tiger Xie posted a twelve over-par 84. The pair made two birdies each and will look for cleaner cards tomorrow.
The Pack will be back in action tomorrow for round two.Â
