Strong performances cap slalom at Denver Invitational

DILLON, Colo. - The first day of the Denver Invitational featured Nevada skiers turn in some strong runs and finishes in the slalom competition.

On the men's side, the Wolf Pack landed two top-15 finishes as Jeger Halbjoerhus took 11th and Iver Walday Naess 15th, while in the women's competition Jessica Blackburn came in 21st thanks to the field's fastest second run.

In a men's slalom in which 24 of the 54 RMISA skiers, including four from Nevada, did not finish the full two runs, Jeger Halbjoerus and Walder Naess used sub-44.0 first runs to put themselves in strong position ahead of the second run.

The second runs of the men's competition were slower throughout the field, but Halbjoerhus just missed a top-five second run yet still finished11th with a final combined time of 1:32.66 (43.85/48.8). Walder Naess, who completed a first run in 43.35, came in 49.62 on his second run to finish 15th among RMISA skiers in 1:32.97.

Jules Baur took 24th in 1:36.64 while David Morken was the fifth and final Wolf Pack men's skier to place, coming in 29th at 1:39.52.

Blackburn came in 21st in the women's competition, thanks in part to the group's fastest time in the second run at 44.64. The run sliced over four seconds off of Blackburn's first run, and helped her finish with a combined time of 1:33.38.

Zali Sutton and Elle Murphy were the other two Wolf Pack women's skiers to place, Sutton coming in 24th at 1:35.85 and Murphy 32nd in 1:44.24. Georgie Sullivan clocked a 48.75 in her first run but did not finish the second, same as Charlotte Clément, who had a 49.22 in her first run.

The field moves to Copper Mountain in Frisco, Colo., for Wednesday's final day of action, as the Giant Slalom is contested.
