The Nevada Volleyball team is set to embark on its first preseason tournament of the year, taking the court in Portland, Oregon, for a challenging trio of matches against California, San Francisco, and Portland State. This tournament marks the debut of Shannon Wyckoff-McNeal as the Wolf Pack's new head coach, and she's eager to see her team's grit and determination in action.
Nevada Faces Cal in Tournament Opener
Nevada's tournament begins on Friday, August 30, with a matchup against Cal at 2 p.m. The Wolf Pack will look to make a strong statement against a Cal team that historically has had the upper hand, holding a 13-2 all-time record over Nevada. However, with Wyckoff-McNeal at the helm and a renewed focus, Nevada is prepared to challenge this trend. They will have to key on one two of Cal's offensive weapons Xuemeng (Maggie) Li and Annalea Maeder.Â
Saturday's Showdown with San Francisco
The Wolf Pack will continue their tournament play on Saturday, taking on San Francisco at 2:30 p.m. This year, sophomore Astrid Puig will lead the Dons, having earned a WCC All-Freshman Team spot with her standout play on both pins. This will be the first time since 2021 that the Pack and Dons have crossed paths. The last matchup between the Wolf Pack and the Dons was in a preseason conference, when Nevada won in a sweep.
Final Day Clash Against Portland State
On Sunday, Nevada wraps up the tournament with a 1 p.m. match against host Portland State. The Vikings, coming off a winning 16-12 season, will provide a formidable challenge. Portland State's 2024 team features six seniors adjusting to new roles as they work to replace five starters and integrate seven newcomers. Sophomore libero Paige Stepaniuk excelled for the Vikings last season, earning All-Tournament Team honors at the 2023 Rose City Invitational and being named Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week.Â
Shannon Wyckoff-McNeal's Leadership and Team's Outlook
Shannon Wyckoff-McNeal, who previously served as an assistant at Washington State, is excited about her first season leading the Wolf Pack. Wyckoff-McNeal has emphasized the importance of growth, hard work and earning every point this season. Her new approach aims to transform the team's performance on the court. With key players like Sia Lii, who led the team in kills last year, and returning starters such as Nicanora Clarke and Gabby McLaughlin, Nevada is ready to rise to the occasion and make an impact in the upcoming matches.
The tournament in Portland will provide the Wolf Pack with valuable early-season experience as they look to build a successful campaign and lay the foundation for a promising season under Coach Wyckoff-McNeal's leadership.
