Nevada has four named to All-Mountain West teams

RENO, Nev. - Four Nevada ballplayers earned All-Mountain West recognition Thursday, with ace Jason Doktorczyk being named to the First Team, and infielder Michael Ball, outfielder Taylor Holder, and closer Ethan O'Neal all landing on the Second Team.

Voting for the teams was on a conference call among the seven head coaches, and nominees were judged based on stats and performance in Mountain West play.

Doktorczyk took the hill for every series opener for the Pack, going 4-4 with a team-best 72 strikeouts. The Wolf Pack's ace finished second in conference play in strikeouts and innings pitched (65.2), while ranking tied for fourth in wins and fifth in ERA (4.25).

Doktorczyk allowed three-or-less earned runs in eight of his 10 Mountain West starts, struck out at least eight in five, and went at least six innings in seven. He was named Mountain West Pitcher of the Week in back-to-back weeks, following outings against San José State (April 12 - career-high 12 strikeouts, one earned run allowed over seven innings) and at UNLV (April 19 - eight strikeouts, three hits, one earned run over eight innings).

Keeping things on the mound, O'Neal earned his first All-Mountain West honor by putting up big numbers as the Wolf Pack's workhorse out of the 'pen. The College of Southern Nevada transfer went 3-1 in relief, making five saves (second in conference play) with 33 strikeouts over 29.1 innings of work.

Besides buttoning up five Wolf Pack wins in conference play, O'Neal's finest moment came April 29 at Air Force, when he went the final 5.2 innings, a career long, and struck out seven to pick up a hard-earned win and a key road series victory.

Ball was named to the Second Team on the strength of a career conference season at the plate in which he batted .321 with five homers, 13 doubles, and 35 RBIs. Besides leading the Wolf Pack with 42 hits in Mountain West play, he also ranked fourth in the conference in both doubles and RBIs.

He hit safely in each of the first 12 conference games of 2024, and had 12 multi-hit games including five three-hit performances.

Holder claimed the first All-Mountain West honor of his career, ranking in the Mountain West top 10 in homers (9, eighth) and triples (3, T-second) while batting .333. Holder also provided the pop for the Pack, with his nine homers, three triples and six doubles leading to a team-best slugging percentage of .685 over the 30 Mountain West games, along with a team-best 1.104 OPS.

Along with Ball, Holder had 12 multi-hit games in conference play, two of those being three-hit days. He also provided the dramatics, hitting a 12th-inning walk-off homer in March 28's 5-4 series-opening win over Air Force.

Nevada finished the season 25-26 overall, and came in tied for third in Mountain West play at 16-14, a six-game improvement from 2023.
