RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. - After a challenging first day at the 2024 Mountain West Championships, the Nevada Women's Golf team bounced back in a sensational way on Wednesday, as four Wolf Pack golfers shot even par or better, and the Pack carded their third-best single round score of the season, finishing the day in fifth place on the team leaderboard.
Leah John led the way for Nevada for the second consecutive day, carding a score of 70 (-2) in the second round to pace the Wolf Pack. John is tied for second overall with an immaculate 36-hole score of 141 (-3), and she sits just two strokes back of the individual leader with 18 holes remaining.
As a team, Nevada shot 286 (-2) for the second round, marking their third-best single round score of the season and the second best score of any team in the tournament for the second round. The Pack entered the day tied for eighth; but, after the spectacular performance, Nevada is in sole possession of fifth-place with one round remaining.
John was exceptional for the second consecutive day. The fifth-year senior opened the round with a par on the first hole, before earning an eagle on the par-5 second hole. She tallied six pars and one bogey over the remaining seven holes on the front nine, entering the second set of nine holes at -1. John had another stellar back nine performance, recording eight pars and one birdie to complete the day at -2. John is just two strokes back from first place entering the final round, as she aims to secure her first Mountain West Championship title.
Anna Shultse, Payton Lovisa, and Gabby Kano each recorded scores of 72 (E) in what was a highly impressive day for Nevada.
Shultse recorded 12 pars and three birdies throughout the round; and, she is now tied for 14th overall at +2 after 36 holes of competition.
Lovisa was highly consistent for the second straight day for the Pack, as she matched her best single round score of the season by recording a 72 (E). Lovisa had a stellar front nine, tallying eight pars and one birdie. She had six pars, one birdie, and two bogeys throughout the back nine, and she is tied for the 20th position on the leaderboard heading into the final round.
After struggling in the first round, Kano responded in resilient fashion, carding the score of even par in the second round. The sophomore had six pars and two birdies on the front nine, before reeling off nine consecutive pars on the back nine. She is tied for 30th overall with 18 holes of play remaining.
Nikki Chindavong rounded out the Wolf Pack lineup, carding a score of 77 (+5) for the second round. Chindavong is in the 44th position on the leaderboard entering the final round.
Nevada will return to the course Thursday morning for the third and final round of the Mountain West Championships.
