RENO, Nev. – Former Nevada Men's Tennis standout Moez Echargui became the first Wolf Pack alumnus to qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games after defeating Benjamin Lock in the 2023 African Games final.
By winning gold in the men's singles draw, Echargui claimed the automatic bid into the Summer Olympics given to the champion of the African Games.
The La Marsa, Tunisia native cruised through the opening rounds of the tournament, finding himself in a quarterfinal match against Côte d'Ivoire's Wilfred Eliakim Coulibaly.
Echargui solidified his spot in the semifinal with a victory over Coulibaly, 5-7, 7-5, 6-1. In the semifinal, Echargui defeated Mohamed Safwat of Egypt, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (9), clinching his place in the final.
In the gold medal match, Echargui won the back-and-forth first set, defeating Lock in a tiebreaker to win the first set 7-6 (9). Lock pulled back a set, winning the second frame 6-3. However, Echargui dominated the deciding set, defeating Lock 6-2 in set three.
Echargui also earned the bronze medal in the doubles competition as well as the gold medal for Tunisia in the team competition.
While at Nevada, Echargui won multiple conference honors, including the 2014-15 Mountain West Co-Player of the Year and the 2011-12 WAC Freshman of the Year. Echargui is tied with Laurent Garcin for most wins in Nevada history, totaling 72 wins for the Pack.
Tennis at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games will begin on Saturday, July 27, with the round of 64 spanning three days at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris.
