Kadiri, Hammond finalists at Mountain West Fall Qualifier

Box Score

LAS VEGAS – Nevada Men's Tennis's top duo, Youssef Kadiri and Lucas Hammond, earned another top two finish, coming at the Mountain West Fall Qualifier. The pair's championship appearance is their second straight of the fall season. Kadiri also made an appearance in the singles final before having to walkover due to injury.

The Mountain West Fall Qualifier, a new tournament, awards an automatic bid to the ITA Conference Masters Championship to the outright winner. The ITA Conference Masters Championship serves as a path for any players in the country to qualify for the NCAA Individual Championships as other paths consist mostly of at-large bids, with few automatic bids.

Kadiri and Hammond opened the tournament against Roberto Hernandez and Illia Maksymchuk of UNLV, the second time the pairs have faced each other this season. The Wolf Pack duo was victorious once again, winning 8-3. The opening match was back-and-forth to begin with, tied 2-2. The Wolf Pack proceeded to win five straight games and finishing off the match without allowing a point in the final game, a love game.

The quarterfinals saw Hammond and Kadiri matched against San Diego State's Matheiu Josserand and Alexander Mandma. Nevada and San Diego State won all their service games, tying the match at 7-7 heading into a tiebreaker for a spot in the semifinals. The service pattern continued with the serving team winning the first five points before Hammond and Kadiri broke for a 4-2 lead. The Wolf Pack never gave up that lead, winning the tiebreaker 7-4.

The Wolf Pack's semifinal match against New Mexico's Daniil Kakhniuk and Nicolas Recoura saw the same trend as the quarterfinal, with the service team winning the first 11 games, giving the Wolf Pack a 6-5 lead. However, Nevada clinched the first set with an uncharacteristic back-to-back double fault from New Mexico on deciding point. Nevada ran away with the second set, taking 3-0 and 4-1 leads before breaking the Lobos again to win 7-5, 6-2.

The championship match came to an unfortunate end for the Wolf Pack, ending in a retirement forced by an injury to Kadiri. David Martirosian and Mohammed Alkotop were crowned doubles champions with a 6-4, 3-0, ret. Victory.

Earlier in the doubles draw, Paul Théate and Rémy Trégourès won their opening match over Eugenio Gonzalez and Louis Chusseau with an 8-4 victory. The Wolf Pack opened with a 4-0 lead, before the Aztecs began crawling their way back into the match. Ultimately, Théate and Trégourès broke San Diego State for the match win.

A loss to the ultimate champions, Martirosian and Alkotop knocked out Nevada's second pairing. Despite a 4-3 lead midway through the match, Utah State won their service games and broke the Wolf Pack, taking a 6-4 lead before trading service games until their victory.

Kadiri's doubles success was only half of his weekend, earning a spot in the singles championship as well. Kadiri's singles run opened with back-to-back straight-set victories. Kadiri defeated Roberto Hernandez (UNLV), 6-3, 6-2, and Phillip Deaton (AFA), 6-2, 6-2.

In the quarterfinals, Kadiri matched up against sixth-seeded Carson Baker of Boise State. Kadiri ran away with the first set winning three straight games for a 5-2 lead before winning the opening set on a love game. Baker returned the favor in the second set, with a very similar sequence. Baker led 4-1 and won the second set on a love game. Kadiri broke Baker in the final set to win the match, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

Kadiri, the underdog by seeding, defeated his semifinals opponent, Arjun Kersten of Air Force, 6-1, 7-5. The second set looked to be falling in Kersten's favor, with the Falcon leading 5-4 and returning deuce against Kadiri, however Kadiri won the game to tie at 5-5. Kadiri then broke Kersten, game-15, before winning on his serve to find himself in the finals against Illia Maksymchuk of UNLV.

Kadiri was forced to walkover his singles match due to an injury he sustained during the doubles championship match.

Hammond and Trégourès each won their round of 32 matches in the singles draw. Hammond defeated Josserand 7-6 (6), 6-4 before falling to Maksymchuk in the round of 16, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Trégourès's victory came against New Mexico's Aram Noroozian in a long 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 win. Trégourès lost to Baker, 6-4, 6-1, in the following round.

In the consolation rounds, Rayen Hermassi picked up three victories, beginning Thomas Navarro of UNLV, 7-6 (4), 6-1. Hermassi also defeated Dylan Jaen of Boise State, 2-6, 7-5, [11-9], and Lukas Velik (BSU), 7-5, 7-5.
