Senegal breaks school record, numerous PR’s set to close out UW Preview Invitational

SEATTLE – Halyn Senegal sped her way to breaking the school record in the 600 meters and the Pack brought home numerous personal records to close out the UW Preview Invitational Saturday afternoon.

The sophomore and Washington's Carley Thomas led the field from the start, before Senegal inched ahead in the final length to come out on top to take first overall in 1:29.16, breaking the school record and setting a new personal record by three seconds. Senegal's time is now ranked ninth in the nation.

"It was a solid season opener for us," said head coach Shantel Twiggs. "We have more to come with lots we have to work on to accomplish the many goals we have this season."

Several of Nevada's other finishes in the season opener also placed in the top-10, totaling 16 overall across 10 different events.

Similar to Senegal's first place finish, Maria Paz Milani also claimed first in the triple jump, taking the crown with her mark of 12.23 meters, just off her personal record from last season (12.28 meters), and sits third overall in the Mountain West.

The Pack's A and B 4x400 meter relays showed up and showed out to cap off the afternoon, securing second and third place finishes. Nevada's 'A' team made up of Melia Middleton, Halyn Senegal, Sarah Marske, and Annalies Kalma ran a time of 3:45.04, coming in just six seconds off the school record set during last indoor season at the Mountain West Championships (3:39.62). This time also puts the squad at third all-time in Nevada school history in the event and leading the Mountain West in the event. Oregon's 'A' team took the first-place finish, coming in at 3:40.43. The 'B' squad (Kylie Burton, Bonét Henderson, Kylee Parsons, and Jasmine Harris) won their heat in a time of 3:52.47, running fast enough to earn second overall. Both Henderson and Parsons saw breakthroughs during their leg of the race, running in the 55 second range for the first time ever.

In the 60-meter hurdles, Sarah Marske saw the highest finish for Nevada, earning a spot in the finals after running a new personal record of 8.49. This mark puts her tied for second all-time in Nevada school history, moving her up on the list from her previous spot from last indoor season where she was tied for third all-time, now with the second fastest mark in the Mountain West. Marske would then compete in the afternoon final, ultimately finishing second with a time of 8.57. Valeria Paez Rueda placed 10th with a new personal record of 9.15, and freshman Savana Chalmers made her collegiate debut finishing18th (9.49).

One of the Pack's stronger events, the 400 meters, saw Annalies Kalma and Melia Middleton finish in the top-5 with Kalma running an indoor personal record of 55.74, placing second and Middleton, who also made her collegiate debut, raced in personal record fashion with a time of 58.09. Kalma's mark rewrote her previous placement on Nevada's all-time top-10 list, as she continues to rank sixth. In the conference, Kalma now sits third overall in the event.

Paz Milani had another successful event in the long jump, claiming third with a mark of 5.53 meters. Paez Rueda saw her second top-10 finish of the day, placing 10th with her mark of 5.20 meters. Following was Natasha Chetty in 12th (5.08 meters), Rayven Nealey in 18th (4.96 meters) and Stina Larsson in 29th (4.49 meters).
