CLOVIS, Calif. – Nevada track and field began the 2023 Outdoor Mountain West Championships Thursday morning, starting off the three-day stretch sitting in eighth place with three points, recording nine personal records, three season bests, and three athletes moving on the finals of their respective events.

Emily Clarke scored her first Mountain West points in the 10,000 meters and the heptathletes are in a great position going into day two.
Emily Costello ran a strong 200-meter race to be the leader going into Saturday's final, and
Halyn Senegal and
Carolyn Ross also made the finals in the 800 meter and 400 meters respectively setting the tone going into day two. We will continue to advance and succeed!"
To kick off the championships,
Johanna Haas,
Kate Kadrmas, and Valeria Paez-Rueda competed in the first four events of the heptathlon. Kadrmas started the Pack off in the 100 hurdles, running a season best time of 14.78, finishing seventh. Both Haas and Valeria Paez-Rueda ran new personal records of 14.45 and 14.70, finishing fourth and sixth in the event. Heading into high jump, Paez-Rueda led the Pack with a seventh-place finish (1.58m), followed by Haas (1.52m) in tenth, and Kadrmas (1.46m) in 12
th.
In shot put, the heptathlon trio all threw for new personal records in the event, each in their third attempts. Haas threw for a mark of 11.81 meters finishing sixth, to set a new personal record, after breaking her personal record mark of 11.63 meters in her first attempt. Kadrmas broke her previous personal record that she set back in April at the Bryan Clay Invitational of 10.93 meters, throwing for a mark of 11.08 meters this afternoon, placing eighth. Rounding out the field, Paez-Rueda threw for a mark of 10.82 meters in 10
th place. Wrapping up the events for the first day, Haas recorded a first-place finish in the 200 meters, running a new personal record time of 24.89. Paez-Rueda tied her lifetime personal record of 26.17, finishing ninth, while Kadrmas finished with a season best time of 26.64 in 11
th. The final three events of the heptathlon begin tomorrow at 10:20 a.m., starting with the long jump.
As the sun began to set over Veterans Memorial Stadium, the evening events began with the javelin throw and the 800 meters. In javelin,
Emily Poole threw for three solid throws, setting her up to advance to the finals in eighth place, her best mark coming from her third attempt (43.40m). In the final, Poole finished eighth, putting the first points on the board for Nevada, besting her furthest mark in the prelim and throwing for a mark of 43.49 meters. Isabelle Steerman finished 11
th overall, her furthest throw being in her third attempt (41.13).
In the 800 meters,
Halyn Senegal ran a new personal record with her time of 2:07.87, placing fifth and qualifying for the final that she will run tomorrow evening. Her time moves her to fourth all-time in Nevada in the event.
Alison Graf finished 17
th (2:17.27).
The 200 meters saw one of the Pack's own qualify in first place heading into the final tomorrow night.
Emily Costello recorded a season best time of 23.39 in a speedy event, the top seven spots all finishing within the 23 second mark. Bonét Henderson finished 17
th (24.67) and
Jasmine Harris (25.87) placed 21
st.
Carolyn Ross picked up a spot in the final after running a time of 1:01.21, qualifying ninth overall.
Kylie Burton (1:02.57) finished 13
th and
Brynn McNabb ran a new personal record with a time of 1:05.04, in 19
th.
In the final event of the evening,
Emily Clarke represented the Pack in the 10,000 meters, placing seventh with a time of 34:53.71, and securing two more points for the Pack, scoring her first career Mountain West Championship points for the team.
Nevada will continue the 2023 Outdoor Mountain West Championships tomorrow beginning at 10:20 a.m. with the remaining three events of the heptathlon and continuing on later in the evening starting with the 100-meter hurdles.
