RENO, Nev. - After concluding the regular-season with their best 54-hole score of the year, the Nevada Men's Golf team will head to Tucson, Arizona to compete at the 2023 Mountain West Championships beginning Friday morning and concluding on Sunday afternoon.
Held at the OMNI Tucson National Course, the 2023 Mountain West Championships is a three-day, 54-hole event. Golfers will play one 18-hole round each day beginning Friday morning.
First round pairings were based by Golftstat national rankings, while pairings for the second and third rounds will be determined by score.
The Field
11 teams from the Mountain West are set to compete in the conference tournament, as Nevada will square off against Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, New Mexico, San Diego State, San Jose State, UNLV, Utah State, and Wyoming.
The Course
The OMNI Tucson National Golf Course is a par-72 course spanning 7,194 yards. The OMNI Tucson National Golf Course has played host to a multitude of world-renowned events, including the PGA Tour's Chrysler Classic and Southern Arizona Open in the past, in addition to serving as the annual host of the Champion Cologuard Classic. The course is known for its traditional-style fairways and its signature 18th hole, which has been ranked as one of the most challenging finishing holes on the PGA Tour by professional golfers.
Projected Lineup
Alex Maxwell
The freshman is coming off a 45th place finish at the PING Cougar Classic; however, he has had a remarkable spring season and will seek to cap it off with an exceptional performance in the conference tournament. Maxwell has finished within the top-38 in four of six events he has competed in this spring, highlighted by a fifth-place finish at the Seattle U Invite at Chambers Bay where he carded a 54-hole score of 213 (E). Maxwell has won two Mountain West Freshman of the Week awards this spring, and he will lead the Wolf Pack lineup this weekend at the conference championships.
Peyton Callens
Callens has had multiple outstanding 18-hole rounds this spring; but, he has struggled to put 54 holes together, as he will look to maintain an elite level of play throughout the entire tournament. He had an exceptional start to the PING Cougar Classic, opening up the event with a 68 (-4) in the first round. The fifth-year senior aims to finish off his collegiate career with a strong performance at the Mountain West Championships.
Trey Davis
Davis started off the PING Cougar Classic with consecutive rounds of 71 (-1) and 72 (E), prior to carding a 77 (+5) in the final round, placing him in a tie for 61st. A fifth-year senior, Davis will conclude his collegiate career this weekend, as he will aim to close out what has been an impressive five years competing for the Pack with his best performance at the Mountain West Championships yet.
Keita Okada
Okada is coming off one his best performances of the season at the PING Cougar Classic, where he recorded a three-round score of 212 (-4) to finish tied for 26th. Okada had the best 18-hole round of his career to open the event, carding a 67 (-5) throughout the first round. Okada shot 69 (-3) in the third round, as he will enter the Mountain West Championships with significant momentum.
Tom Patterson
Like Okada, Patterson is coming off one of his best performances of the year at the PING Cougar Classic. He finished first in the Wolf Pack lineup and tied for 20th overall with a 54-hole score of 211 (-5). Patterson recorded three consecutive rounds of even par or better in the event, as he will enter the Mountain West Championships arguably playing his best golf of the season.
