Nevada Concludes Regular Season with Ninth-Place Finish at PING Cougar Classic

PROVO, Utah – The Nevada Men's Golf team concluded the 2022-23 regular season Saturday afternoon with their best 54-hole score of the year at the PING Cougar Classic, recording a combined score of 853 (-11) to take ninth place at the event.

After a sensational first round performance, followed by a modest second round, the Pack returned to form on Saturday, as they closed out the tournament by carding a third-round score of 282 (-6).

Tom Patterson had an outstanding performance in the final round, carding a career low 18-hole score of 67 (-5), culminating in a tie for 20th place on the individual leaderboard, as the junior completed the event with a 54-hole score of 211 (-5) to lead the Pack.

Beginning on hole 10, Patterson was nothing short of exceptional on the back nine. He opened the round with a par before earning a birdie on the par-3 11th hole. Patterson then parred holes 12 and 13, before sinking back-to-back birdies on holes 14 and 15. Patterson completed the back nine with three more pars on holes 16-18.

On the front nine, Patterson started off by parring the first two holes. He then proceeded to earn his fourth birdie of the round on the par-3 3rd hole. Three consecutive pars followed the birdie, before he picked up his first and only bogey of the round on the 7th hole. Patterson showed great resilience by responding to the bogey with back-to-back birdies on the final two holes, effectively completing the best round of his collegiate career.

Keita Okada also had a stellar final round for Nevada, carding a 69 (-3), bringing his 54-hole total to 212 (-4). Okada finished tied for 26th on the final leaderboard.

Like Patterson, Okada started his round on the 10th hole and put together an incredible outing on the back nine. Okada parred the first three holes before proceeding to tally three consecutive birdies on holes 13-15. He followed that with back-to-back pars and closed out the back nine with a birdie on the par-4 18th hole, marking his fourth birdie on the back nine alone.

On the front nine, Okada tallied four pars, three bogeys, and two birdies, managing to finish below 70 for the second time this weekend.

Alex Maxwell finished third in the Wolf Pack lineup after carding an even-par-72 throughout the final round. He concluded the event with a three-round score of 219 (+1), which placed  him in a tie for 45th in the individual standings. Maxwell had a consistent final round, accumulating 14 pars, two birdies, and two bogeys.

Peyton Callens shot 74 (+2) in the third round, bringing his 54-hole score to 218 (+2), as he finished tied for 49th. Callens tallied 12 pars, four bogeys, and two birdies across the final set of 18 holes.

Trey Davis rounded out the Nevada lineup, as the fifth-year senior shot 77 (+5) on Saturday and recorded a three-round score of 220 (+4) to finish tied for 61st at the event.

BYU won the team title with a 54-hole score of 824 (-40), while Boise State golfer Max Charles finished 19 shots below par to claim the individual championship.
