RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. - The Nevada Women's Golf team had a stellar first day of play at the 2023 Mountain West Championships, carding a one-over-par 289 to complete the first round in fourth place and just four strokes back of first.
Leah John led the way individually for the Pack after an outstanding first round that saw her card a 70 (-2) to finish the day tied for fourth overall. John started off the round with four consecutive pars, before picking up a bogey on the 5th hole. The rest of John's round was nothing short of sensational, as she earned three birdies and 10 pars over the final 13 holes. John sits just two strokes back from first place.
Victoria Gailey also had a tremendous first round for the Pack, opening up the event with a 71 (+1). Gailey started off the day in impressive fashion, earning a birdie on the par-4 1st hole. She then tallied three straight pars, before bogeying back-to-back holes on five and six. Gailey went on to have an exceptional round following the two bogeys, as she earned 10 pars and two birdies over the final 12 holes. Gailey will enter the second round tied for eighth on the individual leaderboard.
Anitra Khoth finished third in the Nevada lineup and tied for 13th overall after carding an opening-round 72 (E). Khoth had 12 pars, three birdies, and three bogeys across the first 18 holes.
Nevada is the only team in the field to have three different golfers complete the first round within the top-13 of the leaderboard.
Freshman Gabby Kano finished fourth in the Wolf Pack lineup, recording an opening-round score of 76 (+4). Kano tallied 14 pars throughout the first round.
Kayla Nocum rounded out Nevada's lineup, finishing tied for 41st overall with a first-round score of 79 (+7). Nocum played much better on the back nine, as she will look to carry over her play from the second half of the first day into the second round tomorrow.
The Mountain West Championships are set to continue tomorrow morning, with Nevada slated to begin play at 7:45am. Nocum will tee off first, with subsequent tee times scheduled for every nine minutes after.
