RENO, Nev. - Nevada Baseball earned its first weekly conference pitching honor of 2023 Monday, as junior
Casey Burfield was named Mountain West Pitcher of the Week.
Burfield, a Sparks native and Reed High School graduate, improved to 2-0 on the season Saturday, post a career-high eight strikeouts while allowing just one run and five hits over six innings of work in Nevada's 6-5, series-clinching victory over Hofstra. The Pack ended up with a three-game sweep of the Pride after Sunday's series finale was canceled.
The win was Nevada's third in a row, marking the Pack's season-high winning streak. Burfield was especially dominant through the middle innings, retiring 10-straight batters and 11 of his final 12 faced without allowing a hit. After giving up an RBI single with one out in the third, Burfield allowed only a two-out walk in the sixth inning the rest of his outing.
On the year, Burfield is now 2-0 with 12 strikeouts and just two walks issued. Nevada (6-5) opens a stretch of six-straight on the road Wednesday at USC (6:30 p.m.), before opening Mountain West play Friday-Sunday at Fresno State.
